4 Yards vs. 50 yard field goal

Postby Hoop Fan » Thu Dec 30, 2010 3:51 pm

i thought JJ was a confident offensive guru. why would you kick a low percentage field goal into a strong swirling wind? you don't believe you can get 4 yards? frustrating day. we played the patsy well though.

That made zero sense to me. Much better chance to get the 1st down than kick it with Matt's inaccuracy -- (see UCF game also).

even a pro bowl kicker would have had a hard time making that kick. from where i was sitting, the wind was swirling like crazy

Arguably his worst coaching decision while at SMU. Matt hasn't been on all year and June decides to have him kick a FG with a ridiculously high degree of difficulty and if I recall correctly he blew a TO and still decided to kick the damn FG when he could have been over with Kyle trying to call a good 4th down play.
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

burning the time out made it that much worse. I'm not here to criticize JJ, really not, it was just a mind boggling call to me.

I will criticize JJ over this. A simply terrible call...you could hear the collective groan when the kicking team came onto the field.

I was surprised as well JJ did not go for it, might be more telling of JJ's confidence in his offense.

I agree. It shows me that he didn't think Padron could make a big play.

and yet we have a RB averaging 6 yards per carry.

Go for out, hold on to your timeouts. If you don't get the first down, you still have two time outs. We burned a timeout, and missed a field goal. Same predicament, one fewer timeout.

it was 6 yards, a 47 yard field goal, and the last time we went for it we got smoked. besides that, the Army kicker made one from about the same distance, didn't he?

Symanski had shown in warmups that he could make that kick. that was the higher percentage decision.

the army kicker did make a similar kick although not nearly under the same circumstance. And, more relevant than what the army kicker did, syzmanski missed a kick from alot shorter distance earlier in the game. i won't debate whether it was 4 yards or 6 to get a first down. You never want to have to convert on 4th down under pressure, but there is no way that kicking had a better chance to succeed than a short pass in that situation. Not only that, has been syzmanksi been healthy the past month? I would have rather gone down swinging on offense rather than a prayer of a field goal into a tough wind. just surprised JJ didnt want the game in his offenses hands.

I didn't like the call & I'm sure JJ is going to be 2nd guessing himself for quite sometime.
I'm sure its the same with the 4th & 2 option call.
