I think it was 1957, said to have been the greatest year for Auburn football before the one just finished. That season, Auburn was "undefeated, untied, unranked (except by AP because on probation), and unacredited." They went ten and zero, but no bowl game (again because of the probation) and were generally conceded to be the best college team in the country.

Academics? Well ....
