Stanford recruits the "Smart'" Market

Good WSJ article today on how Stanford is recruiting to a '$150,000 education' with good athletes to boot ( still a top 25 recruiting class though)....as the SMU football program gets better and more nationally known...can SMU recruit the same way?...

Were having a cold wave,58 right now in Palo Alto so the weather is slightly better here.Just winning does not guarantee a crowd 17000 season ticket sold last year but with Andrew Luck back who kwows.

i call B.S. on this. There may be an exception or two - but for the most part Stanford is taking the same marginal SAT's and lower grades amongst thier athletes as just about anyone else. I can see a great player that happens to also be a fantastic student being more interested in a Stanford, but I guarantee you the majority of their class is in there with the rest of the BCS quality of student - which is to say not very high.

Is "gostangs guarantee" about Stanford and the recruits just an expression or does he have some proof as to the athletes they recruit. Also, don't forget that many SMU players have one session of summer school paid-for in their scholarship which moves the value closer to $60,000 a year. We are still at a disadvantage to the public universities ( not sure about other private schools) who pay for both sessions of summer school thus allowing their players more money to stay on campus and workout all summer. SMU players have to pay their own way till July!

Gostangs you are so wrong I worked at Stanford for many years and they get some slack compared to other students but in no way are the bottom of the bcs barrel

didnt say they were the bottom - said they are much closer to typical BCS then is being "spun" here. and unless you worked for them recently then it is irrelevant - the better the team the worse the average student - that is proven over time.

The coaches are stressing the quality of the education and small class size to the recruits. Whether or not we are recruiting the smartest kids might be debatable, but for some of the bigger names we reeled in, education was important.

I saw a study conducted by someone that listed Stanford's average SATs at the top of all schools in the NCAA-but I can't remember if it was under Harbaugh or prior to his arrival. I think it was in the 1100 range. I do know they significantly changed the admission PROCEDURES for athletes and have gone from among the latest to offer to now a prolific early offeror. It was a study comparing the difference in average SAT of athletes v. the Student Body at large.

don't know for sure, but

1050 or so SAT (2 part, not counting the writing part) seems to have been a lower SAT bound... but a gpa ~ 3.5 required if SAT that 'low'...

min ACT typically 23 or 24... most well above

they count the application essays and the school counselor/teacher recommendations heavily... so those mins above are not locked in as 'sure admits'... a poorly written set of essays and/or poor or even 'lukewarm' set of recommendations from the recruit's school could also result in admission being denied...

Admissions wants to be sure the kid can do the work and graduate first of all. SAT's/ACT's, gpa's and essays, and school recommendations are all indicators... so in that regard if any are such that might lead Admissions to think that the kid might not be able to handle the academic side, the ding comes in.


Simply put... Stanford has by far the highest academic standards for admissions among all big time college sports schools... way higher than Duke, Northwestern, Vandy, etc.

Actually I think I may have been combining two separate studies-one published in 1997 in which Stanford was No. 1 and one in 2008 published by the Atlanta Constitution Journal which did not have access to most private school information. Hasn't there been a change in the scoring too-note the lower scores in 1997 compared to 2008. I've studied this area for a long time and these are just about the only comprehensive studies I've seen. There is another about the Big 10 somewhere and Tulane and Rice both published this type of info when they were considering dropping football and they conducted surveys and released data of peer schools in reports by McKemsy &Co? or something

They only count Math and Verbal and not the third part Writing part added in recent years-and most schools will admit a composite score so it you score better on Math in Test 1 and better on Verbal in Test 2 you can count the best score on each test to arrive a composite score. But I still think there is a scoring change the raised the average score too-you may be right they recentered it.

Stanford also competes for this talent pool with Notre Dame. As a matter of fact, from a value perspective Northwestern is a great option and Vanderbilt degree is first class.

Funny but we're going through this right now - getting ready for college.

To name a few of the 100-plus on the list:

Stanford - SAT Math 680-780 / SAT Critical Reading 650-760 / SAT Writing 670-760 / ACT 30-34

USC - SAT Math 650-750 / SAT Critical Reading 620-720 / SAT Writing 640-730 / ACT 28-33

SMU - SAT Math 590-680 / SAT Critical Reading 560-660 / SAT Writing 560-660 / ACT 25-30

USC played it smart when it came to all these qualifiers. They used their football team to attract 'smart' kids which was a great idea. Grant it that many on the team can barely read & write but that's another story. As for the student body in general, quite a different story. Perhaps SMU has FINALLY figured that out?! LOL!!! Funny thing about the Trojans is they make no bones about it.

As for the Cardinal (the trees), as we all know, they don't take the bottom of the barrel & they shouldn't but they do take some exceptions at times. But at least they're not SEC or Big 12 exceptions. Now those are embarrassing!!!
