STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongFreshman quarterback Stephen Kaiser's college career got off to a rocky start, to say the least. The highly touted passer had his second bout with mononucleosis in less than a year during the Mustangs' preseason workouts, which set him back on the football field and in the classroom. Kaiser visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the effects of the illness, how he got through his freshman season and what he sees as the key to returning to his previous performance level.

Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongExcellent article. Many of us have wondered exactly what was happening with this kid. I think we were initially aware of the mono situation; however, information after the initial awareness just seemed to disappear until now. Hope he gets his strength back and can get some decent reps. in the spring.
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongCan this qualify for a medical redshirt and keep his regular redshirt option for this year?
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongI had no idea the effects of mono could last so long.
Feel better, Stephen
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strong
The medical hardship cannot be claimed until the eligibility is exhausted I do not believe. Right now in is a redshirt. It could come into play later ala Case Keenum. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strong
From reading the article it sounds more like he had stereo rather than mono. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongVery nice, mrydel!

Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongsail420 - in order to get a "medical redshirt" you need to miss two seasons with injury - then you have to apply after your senior year for the "hardship"

Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongHere is a wish for Stephen Kaiser, as well as the other QBs to be well this fall, if not be Spring Practice. I'm looking forward to seeing competition and not injury or illness deciding who gets on the field.
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongI'm pulling for Kaiser, like I am for all Mustangs.
Get healthy!
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongThanks PP for all the top-notch stories on the three QBs various injuries/ailments.
I hope they all continue to get healthy. ![]()
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongKaiser is going to be money in this system. Here is hoping SMU offense can make some serious strides so Kaiser can get some reps as the back up.
Pay Lashlee more money
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strong
Couldn't agree more. Your coverage stands alone, as always.
If Padron is resting that ankle and getting in the "coaching" time Coach Morrison mentioned, and if McDermott is still working his way ... back (yeah, I said it, but it was unintentional), Kaiser might run the first-team offense in the spring. Should be interesting to see how he does.
Re: STEPHEN KAISER: Coming back strongI watched him in the warmups before the game Saturday and got to see his arm strength, or rather lack thereof.
I can see now why Coach never put him in for a series or two despite McDermott's struggles. "We hung with them until the game got out of hand." -DanFreibergerForHeisman
