McJunkin: ankle improving

Postby PonyPride » Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:33 pm

Center Blake McJunkin, who left Sunday's game with an ankle injury that was diagnosed as a high ankle sprain, said Thursday that his ankle is "much better" after several days of treatment and walking on it, and said there's a chance he'll be able to play Saturday against UTEP. McJunkin declined to offer a percentage for the chance that he'll return to the field this week, saying he intends to dress for the game and it likely will be a decision that gets made Saturday.

Take the game off- don't rush it. I would rather have him full-speed for the rest of the season than only partially healed. Be smart.

Only problem is the true freshman backup. Try not to waste a red shirt of an offensive lineman if possible. You let Tennison play and McJunkin fill in if necessary due to injury or to give him a breather. Try to keep McJunkin off the field as much as possible but the true freshman totally.

mrydel- How good is Laseki (I think that is the fr. center-no?) ? If he is average then burn the shirt and get another in a future class. If he is really great then try and protect him. JMHO.

hate to burn a RS when we have 2 seniors at the position...but also hate to have Blake limp through an entire season because we rushed him back before he was needed.

I have just always believed you redshirt every OL you are able. This kids we have now as seniors all had to play as true freshmen and you can go back and look at the wins they did not pile up. They need a year at least to turn the fat to muscle and get ready for D-1 play. I think Laseki is supposed to be pretty good. I am not worried about his ability, I just want him to get 4 fully developed years of play.

The idea of saving McJunkin for backup was something I read on another thread that Jones was saying.

And Bus would say RS every D lineman as well. :) Unfortunatly we need to go with what is ready, prepared and available. Not disagreeing, just saying that our needs dicatate a lot of our options at this point.

Shouldn't it be more advantageous to allow Laseki to get some game experience this year, rather than wave goodbye to 2 seniors next year and start 2012 with a redshirt freshman at center that has zero game experience??

cutter- don't disagree but IMO it would depend on how good that fr. was.

Got to admit that I thought Tennison was a junior. This is why the coaches get the big bucks. Center is a very tough position and important role in the quality of the OL. Is it best to get some experience or best to beef him up while he is practicing for a year? I do not know the answer.

yeah, I know nothing about Laseki, but it just makes me nervous talking about starting freshmen (true or redshirt) at key positions. I think, game experience, however limited, is significant in player development. I guess I'm hoping that one of our qbs really takes off, so that there will by some mop-up time to insert such players.
Of course, since I'm not the coach, I'm okay with whatever they decide they need to do.
