Matty BellI am sure you Pony fans are familiar with this quote.
"There's one sure way to stop us from scoring........ give us the ball near the goal line." Matty Bell / SMU
Re: Matty BellLove that quote.
Re: Matty BellYes, in fact I posted that exact quote on the 'add your favorite quotes' forum in the around the hilltop section.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: Matty BellMet Coach Bell many years ago. He was much older and wasn't as sharp mentally as he once was. But he stood tall and erect and presented himself as a Southern gentleman. I know at least one of his former players admired him to no end.
Re: Matty BellI met him many years ago myself. I think he was a fine gentleman.
Papaw
Re: Matty BellMr. Bell was truly a man. He was a close family friend, who wrote me my acceptance letter to SMU. Coach Red Barr is the only other gentleman I could compare him to during my time in athletics at the hill top. Fond memories, pony up.
Re: Matty BellThanks for the stories on Matty Bell. Great to hear he was as good a person as he seemed from the outside. If Doak Walker decided to play for him instead of playing with his good friend Bobby Layne, then he must have been a great man and a great coach.

Re: Matty BellHey....wouldn't it be neat to hear more from the legendary players from the past that are still living and/or their family and teammates. run the interviews on the video board before the games...no more of that "i put on for the city junk". Real heros from the swc days.
Matty Bell
I actually like the new stuff that our players can actually relate to. Derail the Frogs!
Re: Matty Bell
Or both - I think SMU should be doing oral histories thru video from our older players. We are losing a lot of our great players from Doak's era and other (Meredith) and to get their stories would be very valuable for prosperity's sake. Thinks about the great stories we get from mrydel and ponyte. Those should be committed to paper, audio and/or video for Heritage Hall. Maybe 50s Pony is doing something long those lines. Re: Matty Bell
Are you sure that wasn't Phil Bennett?
Re: Matty Bell
Bennett just put it into actual applicaton. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: Matty BellWe are compiling a bunch of oral histories. In the not too distant future we will also be posting a number ofpictures that will tell you a lot about SMU's athletic history.
Someone posted that Doak came to SMU to play for Matty. While Matty was one of the reasons Doak came to SMU the biggest reason was his former Highland Park coach, Rusty Russell. When he won the Heisman is 1948 you could take one coach with you to New York for the presentation and Rusty Russell was the coach that Doak chose to go with him. We have just found a 5 minute film that covers completely Doak going to New York for the presentation. The Heisman Trophy Committee had nothing on Doak and we have sent them a copy. If anyone wants a copy I will send it to you for $10.00.
Re: Matty BellFor some reason, maybe mistakenly, I have the feeling that Harvey "Rusty" Russell was SMU's version of UNT coach Dodge............Russel, HP - SMU, after Matty retires his head coaching responsibilities, Rusty lasts Two Years as HC and then gone......Dodge, coach of Southlake Car., - UTN, several years as HC and then gone. 50's PONY you'd know better than I. Comments.
Re: Matty BellIt would be really neat if, as part of the football intro or halftime video, we could have clips of 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s mustang players and coaches showing/talking about our glory years at SMU - help remind fans young, old and new how SMU used to be at the pinnacle of football excellence and innovation in the past. Along the lines of Notre Dame playing a Knute Rockne speech clip before a game. Perhaps you and Thaddeus can collaborate?
I know we have banners of records hanging up on the concourse but I think it would be great if we could make SMU's greatness and history even more tangible and interactive for fans. I wish SMU would invest in cheap projectors and project video images of doak walker tearing up defenses, or the famous touchdown in the 1935 SMU-TCU game on loop on the walls during games...interviews with kyle rote, matty bell, hayden fry, forrest greg, don meredith, etc. We should be showing that SMU was "BCS" at the same time we are saying SMU should be BCS again.
