ECU Applies to Big East

Postby smupony94 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 5:24 pm

Tweet from a New York Times writer:
"East Carolina (again) applied to the Big East today. They didn't want it a secret, as "50 people were copied on the e-mail."

only problem is that the Big East might only survive as a basketball league (back to the future?) where some schools play football at the FCS level

I think ECU really wants to be part of the eastern division of the Big XII (which will hold together because it will have more exit fees coming)

True. Should we do the same?

All things being equal, you want divisional members close together.

ECU isn't close to any remaining Big East member

Navy nearly to Big East before Pitt, SU exited
Posted on: September 20, 2011 5:53 pm

Before the sudden news broke last weekend that Pittsburgh and Syracuse were leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big East was in the final stages of acquiring Navy as a football-only member.

No official invitation was extended by the league, but both parties had extensive discussions about Navy joining the league in football only and it very well could have happened in the next couple of weeks, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

Besides Navy, the Big East also was targeting Air Force and league sources felt confident both schools would have been Big East members, perhaps within the next year – that is until Pitt and Syracuse announced they were leaving for the ACC.

“Navy is one of the most special things out there, prestige,” said an administrator who would benefit from Navy being in a BCS league.

You do not often see reporters describe their anonymous sources in a way that actually helps you understand why the source might be saying the quote attributed to them. Wish more reporters would say things like this rather than just saying "a source close to the situation", etc.

I think we should especially if the Big 12 stays together.

Mountain West confirms talks with Iowa State...
Craig Thompson, commissioner of the Mountain West Conference, has a message for Iowa State: “Keep us in mind.”

Thompson said today members of his staff have talked with Cyclone officials about possibly joining his conference, should the Big 12 disband.

Thompson added that he feels Iowa State and other Big 12 members would prefer to keep their current conference together or possibly merge with the Big East, but Mountain West officials have reached out to schools that might be looking for a new home.
