Matty Bell, Ray Morrison, and Ron Meyer had more wins and better winning percentage.

Ray Morrison should get extra credit for tying 20 games in a 12 year span...

Meyer is probably the best example to compare Jones to. Meyer came in with a mission to rebuild a terribly neglected program. He had little talent and poor facilities. He had to recruit better athletes and upgrade SMU's facilities. And raise attendance and support. Jones perhaps has an even bigger challenge than Meyer.

Agreed, Ron Meyer.

yeah, his "recruiting budget" is a lot less.

You can't make this comparison until he is done coaching. You would need to show W/L for the other coaches during their first 44 games and not their entire coaching tenure at SMU.

don't bring real-life statistical analysis into this! we never let true facts get in the way of reaching the conclusions we initally jump to.

Even then, it is not a good comparison as each coach walked into a different situation.

Jones doesn't have to compete with the recruiting budget of all the other schools in the SWC. Not that their budgets have decreased, just the pressure for Jones is to recruit without that extravagant budget. The SWC at that time was known as the OPEC conference because it set the price for QBs, RBs and so forth.

You really can't count Coach Jones first year (2008) here as he went 1-11 with a team he inherited with little returning talent and no time to recruit. However, you have to give him and his staff credit for developing bennett's last recruiting class into some pretty good players as seniors today.
