Pressure also turns coal into graphite, a very soft and slippery substance made of the exact thing as diamonds. Note, one's molecular structure is in layers which allows for the layers to easily move while the other has a tightly bonded rigid network of evenly spaced molecules.

What?

About the only thing I understood was "very soft and slippery substance". After that you lost me.

Imagine in one instance, the molecules are bound of paper and then layer on top of each other. They would slide about fairly easily when one pushes the top sheets in one direction or another. The top sheet would move followed by others but the bottom sheets may not move. But if folks leave the stack of paper alone, it sits there with a solid appearing form. Graphite

A diamond would have the molecules binding together to form a solid box. Very rigid and when one pushes a side, the whole thing moves as one.

Diamond, note bonds are in all directions (sorry the ! reresents a bond, limit of my comuter) thus forming a more rigid structure. Diamond

All I offer is really good trivial tidbits so one has something to spout out when things get silent at a cocktail party. And none of it is recommended for pickup up the hot babes.
