Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramWell said, even if more than a little slightly condescending of SMU. Let's kick their asses next year too.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-Telegramwow, 180 from mac's blog a few days ago where he was on-board with GP's comments.
Derail the Frogs!
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-Telegramwow, even as a reporter he can't stay away from being a fan. what a smuck
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramStupid us (fans)! The SMU-TCU game although called a "rivalry" game has not been a true rivalry for probably 50 or 60 years. Sure the fans want to win because of the proximity. The problem has been that I can't remember when both teams have been good at the same time! For years it was SMU and TCU terrible and then SMU and the death penalty killed any competition for two decades although occassionaly SMU would pull off an upset. To be a true rivalry game that people want to attend and the media nationwide want to cover, you have to have two good programs and you have to have some uncivility between the two teams, coaches and fans. I have to give Patterson credit and I have to think June is in on it. First TCU puts up the "TCU Reigns "billboard by the SMU campus last summer and then Patterson takes offense to some very mild comments by smu. Great marketing campaign by these two guys because now more people will care and attend the games and tv won't just be a local telecast. Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!And it didn't cost a penny!
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramI have to agree with GiddyUp.
Although, this is a better job by Engel than his blog yesterday, he seems to give Patterson wayyyy too much of the benefit of the doubt. And, I cannot believe that he describes GP's outbursts as "GP's carefully thought-out criticisms". Also, his was the only report I read that named and published each of the officials' names. That is pretty low.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramWhat the hell game were the TCU people watching? I saw this thing twice and, while there was the normal missed call here and there, I never saw anything but balanced officiating by the refs. Look, as much as the refs might want to have a bias against TCU, we've publicly expressed our interest in getting out of CUSA too.
File this in the making [deleted] up, excuses folder.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramHere's the bottom line--everybody has to deal with games in which the refs blow calls, its the nature of the beast. Be good enough to overcome it and you don't have to whine later.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramAgreed. But there were no blown calls on balance, meaning they missed just as many of ours as they missed of theirs. Let's not give them that high ground.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramOkay, but I watched the game too and I can see where they are coming from....

Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-Telegram
That was sarcasm (or some other kind of humor). His point was that GP had time to think out his criticisms but either did not or gave in to his non-careful side. ![]() Go Ponies!!

Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramMac Engel writes like a 8th grader.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-Telegram
sorry, I disagree. I see no attempt at sarcasm or humor in his statements. the entire paragraph makes Engel's intent clear: "GP's carefully thought-out criticisms of the officials, SMU and SMU coach June Jones was not some knee-jerk overreaction immediately after a 40-33 OT loss. GP waited until Tuesday before unleashing his words during his weekly press luncheon. Every time the questions drifted in a different direction, he brought all of us in the room back on point." From his comments, Engel believes that Patterson's viewpoint is valid, measured, and well-thought-out. I, on the other hand, believe that it is indeed reactionary and uncontrolled, a personality trait he has displayed on many occasions. the caveat might be a point that someone else has raised on this board. namely, that it was a carefully crafted ploy to re-frame the loss as a stolen victory in order to maintain consideration for a B12 position. as things have played out today, perhaps there is some truth in that. still, I have great difficulty is giving that much credit to a man that has consistently displayed such uncontrolled volatility when his own agenda is threatened. just my take on it.
Re: Mac Engel's take on Patterson today in Star-TelegramHow about this angle, GP knew by that time, before it was public, that TCU was going to the B12 and could just cut loose. He never really wanted to cooperate with SMU but was pressured by admin types. So he could say what he really thought.
