Phantom Holding Call

Postby LakeHighlandsPony » Mon Sep 02, 2013 1:07 pm

Say what you want about Gary Patterson but if he had his team derailed by an awful call like that he would still be screaming. Not a peep from June.

Google SMU holding call and look at the number of threads that discuss how this call changed the game.

How does the rest of the country see this but not the Dallas Morning News?

I think it was one of the worst calls I have ever seen but being in Arkansas where a game has never been lost except for bad calls, I refuse to bring it up as an issue.

Just watching DVR replay, that was total crap. Line literally got tackled by the Tech D guy. Then we miss a FG and that was the game. We would be up 16-13 at that point. Sheads knees injury looks really bad. I am afraid he is done for yr.

The defense did not have to give up the td drive after that series and the kicker did not have to miss. Plus the defense might have given up a td whether we scored the TD or not. I look at the bad call as a 4 point swing; the missed FG and their subsequent TD is on us not the refs.

JJ "nailed it" in his interview today...it was a bad call but we didn't respond well to it. Our guys are pretty (mentally) fragile and don't seem to deal well with adversity. If we get the 3 pts, it's a 13-12 game and still anyone's game. At 13-9, it's still anyone's game, but we let Tech march down the field and that 14 pt swing is more than this bunch has demonstrated they can overcome.

Watching video of the play numerous times only strengthened SMU coach June Jones’ opinion about the holding penalty that nullified a touchdown in the season-opening loss to Texas Tech.

“I would say that it was the worst call that I’ve ever seen,” Jones said after Tuesday’s practice. “Fourteen-point swing, it’s too bad. I feel bad for the kids more than anything.”

“I’m disappointed mainly in that we couldn’t change the momentum after we got that terrible call,” Jones said. “It seems like we just didn’t respond after that.”

Don't worry. Mental preparedness isn't until year 11 of the June Jones Roadmap. We'll get there though.

LOL. Forgot about the PI call. That was equally as bad as the holding call on Line. Also, the roughing call on Barnes was a joke. Not a great day for the zebras.
Back off Warchild seriously.

And the late hit call on Sanders, but I am not one to ever say you lose a game because of officiating. The game really came down to us not converting FG's into TD's in the red-zone.

All this comes down to coaching.

How many teams would take a bad call as a call to action and want to prove something?

Take the sideline antics of a Fatterson to spark a team when hit with a bad call or missed call. It gets a team motivated for the next opportunity. JJ is just tooooooooooo easy going.
Just send 'da money.

Terrible call but that is the way it goes in some sports. The best teams overcome bad umpiring strike zones, referees and don't let it get them down. No excuse to just give up. Must be mentally tough to bounce back. Those calls generally even out over a season. In other words, don't let a game be close enough to come down to one call.
