How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?June's current deal has him right at $2M/year. I'm thinking that in order to get a truly top notch coach in here we will need to double what June is making. Is there enough of a financial commitment to make this happen? Given the nature of college football now is not the time to be cheap. Would SMU be willing to give Chad Morris or Kirby Smart $5M/season for 5 years?
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?No, that is Nick Saban type money. Somewhere between 2 and 2.5 mil should get who we need. Neither Kingsbury, Malzahn nor Patterson make that much.

Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?My guess is that we will stay at $2 mm for the HC but increase assistant coach salaries quite a bit. I could see the OC and DC each pulling in $500K while top recruiter types pull in $200K.
SMU can attract a good coach (but not an up and comer like Morris or Spataval) for $2 million especially if they give him funding to hire quality assistants. Our problem isn't facilities, location, academics, - heck BB has proven that SMU will support a winner - our problem is a coach who doesn't want to be here and is playing out the string. Period. Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?I just think that we need to act like a P5 school if that is our desire. $4M will get you a top notch coach and send the signal that we aren't screwing around.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?
Not necessarily. It could get you an overpaid mercenary that only cares about money and not the school. #HammerDown
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?
Exactly, we tried that and that is what we got. You can get a good coach for $2M with incentive pay for reaching specific goals. Just send 'da money.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?We already have an overpaid mercenary and see where that has taken us.
Need an older coach trying to rehabilitate his career - Butch Davis - or a HC who wants to move up. I don't see us getting a middle aged, retread coach. I don't see us being able to attract the hot commodity assistant coach - regardless of money. Pony 81
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?Preface this by saying I don't know who is the right fit for the program based on who is available now and who will be at year's end. And yes, I know he's likely past his prime. But...
Hire Coker and we have two coaches that have won National Championships. Not sure how many schools can promote that type of track record in the top two sports on any American campus. Recruiting is truly important, and this is obviously not going to happen. Just interesting.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?Wonder what ED's thoughts are on this.......
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?Patterson $3,120,760
Sumlin $3,100,000 + max bonus $750K Malzahn $2,440,000 + max bonus $1250K Briles #34 $2,426,360 Leach $2,250,000 + max bonus $625K JJ #52 @ $1,911,511 Kingsbury $1,855,000 + max bonus $600K http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/salaries/ Nobody on this list would consider leaving where they are to coach at SMU except maybe Leach at about $3000K. Coker, and Franchione are around $300 to $400K with bonus, but aren't exactly world beaters at UTSA, and TX State. May the forth be with us.
How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?We should just take Coker from San Antonio. Imagine what he could do with our facilities, tradition, funding and godfather's top 25 squad on campus. Recruiting will not be our concern
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... deal.html/
those are 2013 numbers for sumlin. he and strong both make about 5 million a year and numerous perks.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?Briles should be making 3.5-4 million. Baylor better get ready to pay.
Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?
Looks like someone heard you "Texas might have wanted to snag him. Maybe the Redskins, too. Those are two reasons why Briles makes a reported $4.2 million salary at a school without the tradition of at least three Big 12 schools. He's coveted and skilled." http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... light-show They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: How Much $$$ Will We Throw at a HC?2 million is fine, better coach is what we need to focus on.
