TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBhttps://sportsday.dallasnews.com/colleg ... mu-history
not sure if garret should be on the list Mustang from India
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBSo I guess leading the nation in passing, as did Chuck Hixson gets no consideration
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBTough to limit it to 5, but I'd agree that Hixson belongs.
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBI'd replace Benner with Hixson. Didn't watch either of them play since I am waaaaaaay too young, but I hear the old farts talking about Hixson way more.
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBHixson is a no-brainer. great college qb. ground breaking offense.
Benners was before my time but from what I know he belongs in this group.
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBLazy journalism on DMN part, no surprise.
2. Lance McIlhenny -- One of the greatest option quarterbacks in college football history, McIlhenny was the leader of some of SMU's best teams. He was a three-time All-SWC selection and is SMU's all-time winningest quarterback. Hey DMN, he was the all-time winningest quarterback in SWC history. Oh, and I would include Hixson as well.
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QB
Dandy Don Meredith is in the College Football HOF, led the SWC in passing for 3 years, and was a 2 time All-American. While I tend to favor McIlhenny, reasonable minds could pick Meredith. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBI recall how Gary Hammond was All SWC as a sophomore at running back, All SWC at wide receiver as a junior, and played QB as a Senior. He was not the best SWC QB but he was again All SWC as an athlete while playing QB.
That in mind, I would replace Lance with Hixson and name Lance as the MVP QB. He stands above all in the wins record book but was not a traditional style QB. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBI agree mrydel. I'll never forget that breakout game for Lance at UT when the horns had no idea how to deal with our option offense, led so brilliantly by Sir Lancelot, as Skip Bayless used to call him. Hey, and the guy could throw too when needed. Very accurate and efficient passer. I also think Mike Ford deserves some consideration for this list. That dude had a gun. Pony P-1
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBAs I remember, Hammond was the only player in SWC history to be all-conference 3 years at 3 different positions: WR as a soph; RB as a jr; QB as a sr. (Freshmen were not eligible to play then.)
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QB
Correct but he was not the All SWC QB even though that was his position. He was a special named member. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBi'm sure someone else did that but I don't know who off-hand.
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBHixson should be there...in place of Gilbert.
stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBI do not think anyone else did. Unusual to have a player of that ability play 3 different positions.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: TOP 5 ALL time SMU QBIn Hammond's last year, the Arkansas Razorbacks voted him the best QB they played against.
Long live Inez Perez!
