Will Mustangs be ready for Bulls?

Postby BIGHORSE » Thu Sep 26, 2019 4:37 pm

We ha d a great win against the hated frogs, but now we need to be focused

on the Bulls, I hope the team has moved on from last Saturday, and are

completely ready for a tough game in Florida.

One advantage this team has is veterns from onther successful programs (those 21 transfers). That adds maturity that usually takes a few years to develop. Its up to those that know about high level competition and winning to provide the leadership to help an otherwise young team advance. Usually, it woud be panic time. But now I feel we have talent, depth and leadership to provide for a very successful season.

My main concern is the team is still celebrating the frog game, and overlooking USF.

Hopefully not. Sonny will have to make sure that is not happening.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

You hear him doing exactly this in the locker room video before the skillet is brought in and celebrations erupt. I’m sure he continued it all week.

I noticed that too when the skillet was brought in. This is the first conference game, and I’ve heard Sonny mention several times that the focus is to win our conference. I bet the team comes out fired up.

I am very concerned too. Watching SMU players, staffers etc...on twitter, they were still posting TCU celebration stuff yesterday. USF is at the VERY least, athletically equal to us. I know Sonny has been preaching to them all week, let's just pray, the players weren't sleeping during the sermon.

I'll tell you why we won't slack off.

The awesome thing about depth and the large number of high quality walkons we picked up in the last class is that they push the starters week in and week out. That is why we start off every single game really strong on offense and defense - the athleticism and talent on our scout teams allows our first team to be over-prepared for their opponents. There isn't a huge drop off in skill on the other side of the ball when we walk onto the field and play a game.

The second thing that depth does is provides a challenge to keep your job. If the first team gets lazy, the second team is right there wanting a spot in the lineup. If Roberson or Proche get sloppy, we have three frosh that are really skilled to step in. Even with Buechele, we have two really good backup quarterbacks if he doesn't do his film work.

So, I don't think it is going to happen. Turnovers and penalties can happen and mess up a game. But I don't think lack of effort or prep is going to be an issue with this squad.

As a side note - I'm telling you guys the reason we haven't offered a ton of scholarships is because they want to see how some of these walk-ons perform. I guarantee you that there are some scholarships sitting in reserve waiting for those guys.

Bue is a leader...that counts. He has skins on the wall.

This staff has set expectations...the players have seemingly bought into them.

The players have responded...so far...no "mailing it in" drama as is found south on I-45.

Since we won our "Super Bowl", there is now the thought that this could go further than any player has experienced on this roster at SMU..that alone is adequate motivation to focus.

One last thing...SMU hasn't shown the "fold the tent" mentality of the past teams when adversity rears its ugly head. The stand against TCU did nothing but build that mind-set. It is going to be a TIGHT game Saturday, but SMU will be ready.

As I said before, I believe this is the Coaches game to win. They have to keep the kids focused and make the required in-game adjustments since they have no film for last bye week on USF and new QB. I expect that to happen and keep SMU in the win column. That's not to say my stomach doesn't have butterflies regarding this game.

The correct nickname for 7 is Boosh.
Leader of the Band-itos.
