Should SMU opt out of ACC title game?

Postby Hoofprint » Wed Dec 04, 2024 5:05 pm

An outrageous but somehow interesting idea, designed to guarantee a playoff bid:

No, Rhett would not do that but it does need to be addressed.

Interesting thoughts. The fact is that this playoff favors SEC and BT because they have all the major influence. Same especially is adamant publicly that th SEC deserves 4 auto bids, and says the BT should demand the same. The system is corrupt.

If that happened then the justification to keep SMU out would be that they were cowardly and didn’t have the mettle of a playoff team.

No, but the fact that it’s even being talked about shows the flaw. If it doesn’t change, it’s only a matter of time before a team in a similar situation calls in sick or something.

That is what the SC and BT meant for it to be: rigged for them, every year. They are OK with maybe 3 others being allowed 1 team in per league. But they want all the rest.

ACC was very competitive in games against SEC opponents but tough to rest our case on 5-3 Louisville beating up on a 1-7 Kentucky team. It hurts that 7-1 Clemson lost at home to 5-3 South Carolina. Of course, 5-3 Ga Tech gave 6-2 SEC Championship Game bound Georgia a scare in Athens and 5-4 Michigan beat 7-2 Ohio State in the horseshoe so rivalry games are a different animal altogether.

Just beat Clemson and leave no doubt about whether we belong!

To me, the number one goal is the conference championship. To be the ACC conference champion, and going undefeated is something truly special. Would rather have the Conference Championship than just simply make the playoffs. Of course, the conference championship guarantees a spot.

Have to play the game to win the prize.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

I would be concerned that to opt out of playing would be considered a forfeit, and as such, a loss against our record.

Never opt out of a game unless for safety concerns or natural disasters.

Players play to compete. This is the biggest game for SMU players in generations. It would kill players to have this chance and then some suit decides to 'opt out'. Players want to earn victories. TV networks want to manipulate schedules to make more money. Tow entirely different goals.

So I guess you’re a good person to ask.

If you were a player today, Would you rather opt out of a CCG if it means going the through the whole playoff gauntlet and winning theNC? I didn’t play college football, but I’d have to think that the NC would be the far greater prize, especially in the scenario where the CCG could detriment my team’s chances of getting to the NC
