I can't blame these conferences for trying to extract "long-term commitments" from their members. But such commitments aren't worth the paper they're written on. If there was any doubt before, I think Fresno State and Nevada proved the point. BYU may commit to the MWC "long term". But that term will be exactly as long as it takes BYU to get a better offer. BYU's not alone there. The conference money game has become totally dog eat dog.

Is BYU REALLY all that relevent in the landscape of College football these days?
Sure - I remember the glory years - but many of those years coincide with our glory years.
Sorry - but BYU is about as big of a deal in my book as Northwestern or Baylor and Tulane has challenged for an Nat Championship to the same extent that BYU has in the last decade or so.

Search on BYU and replace and insert SMU.

Houston has beaten several BCS teams and is predicted to win CUSA. They view Houston as a talented strong team to put in their conference to improve their BCS chances along with the Houston TV market.

BYU Still Pushing Independence.... http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/501 ... l.html.cspBy Jay Drew The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated 1 Minute Ago With a Wednesday deadline looming, indications abound that Brigham Young University is still doggedly pursuing a plan to go independent in football and has been in simultaneous membership negotiations with both the Western Athletic Conference and the West Coast Conference for the rest of its nonfootball sports teams.

Adios BYU. Would Houston join a BYU-less MWC? Could CUSA maybe lure TCU and Air Force into the fold?
Back off Warchild seriously.

I still think BYU is out the door, but to keep them, the MWC will have to invite USU. If that happens, TCU will be livid unless two concessions are made to them. (1) That they are in a division with BYU and/or AFA for attendance reasons. (2) That they not be shown on the BYU tv network (I think the Church of Christ folks would have a problem with that one). With the pie shrinking, they're not going to take losing BYU and AFA from their schedule 2 out of four years. If that is not agreed to then they'll bolt.
I hardly think joining th MWC means walking away from any relationship with ESPN. The Frogs had Gameday at TCU last year, and ESPN brokered the deal that brought an 'away' game to JerryWorld next week v Oregon State. If you are a commodity, they will work with you.

Agreed, but the MWC / WAC /BYU can't be good for MWC long term prospects. I would have expected TCU (Frogs deserve it) to gain in any transaction, not remain the same or regress a bit with the loss of Utah and possible loss of BYU, despite gaining BSU. Fresno and Nevada don't replace the UT schools, only the Broncos off-set it a bit.

We have no clout. We are a school with 7500 kids, 65% of them are girls. Hardly a TV commodity. I don't expect things to get any better, all we can do is keep winning and hope someone is shamed into taking us. MWC is our best bet for now, with some reasonably competitive teams now, and a couple coming in. Is it the dream scenario? Hardly. BTW, I think it is 50/50 that Houston gets a MWC bid in the near future. Interesting times we live in.

If UH gets an MWC bid its also 50/50 whether they'll take it. BYU is out the door according to ESPN insider and is looking to nuke the MW in the process. (And if ESPN is saying it, its probably because they're brokering the deal). So suppose you have an MWC without BYU or Utah. Now the question becomes does TCU stay there (with it virtually a sure thing that there will be no BCS invite), work with CUSA to broker a super championship, or start looking around and see if the weather is nicer in CUSA. (Less travel, better bowls and TV). Clearly, these are interesting times.
