We have good players but no depth. If anyone goes down at any position except WR we're basically screwed.

June Jones does not recruit, period. His recruiting classes are atrocious and is always in the 90-125 recruiting classes and then justify that he jokingly can train them up.

In his sixth year has yet to beat a top 25 team except TCU which is a rivalry game so you expect a one to money trade off which he hasn't.

He doesn't connect with alums and fan base. If anything just creates hostility, obviously...

All 3 together creates the worst coach. Sure the Hawaii bowl (1st time) was exciting same for armed forces bowl but after that its c'mon win a conference championship... Get us to a reputable bowl not a gimme bowl. Time is now to curb stomp him and put Hal as interim.

SMU_Alumni11 - While you and Mustangsabu continue to argue academia I don't know if he will ever deconstruct your original argument, but I sure as hell will since it's a load of bull.

Your first assertion regarding recruiting classes being "always in the 90-125...":
National Ranking according to Rivals:
2013: 70
2012: 89
2011: 50
2010: 76
2009: 80
2008: 94
So the only year he was as you say "always in the 90-125..." was the first year he got here with a shortened recruiting season. It hadn't been that great but not nearly as bad as your memory suggests.

The bowl games. Gimmes? Really? I'm trying to find the point spread stats to prove but we played Nevada, Army, Pitt, and Fresno State in our bowl games. I bet we were only favored in one (Army, which we lost at home - I'm not happy about it either) and we won 3 of the four and by wide margins. Maybe not the Orange Bowl, but you've got to crawl before you walk.

Your assertion is that June Jones is the "worst coach." So if you want to go back to Cavan, or Bennett, be my guest. I'd bet it would be a pretty lonely cheering section.

Full disclosure, I like you graduated from SMU with a business degree. I live in North Carolina so I root from afar, but I've been extremely pleased over June Jones' tenure to be able to root for a competitive team with a winning record over the last 4 years and watch my team play in bowl games. I'm ready to take the next step, compete for conference championships and BCS games, but I'm also understanding that it takes time. Until Jones takes a significant step back for multiple years in a row in the W-L column ( the only column that really matters), I'll continue to support him. The dips in the last two recruiting class rankings is very troublesome, but I'm content to wait and see if this is reflected on the field. I think Jones has earned that right.

As your moniker suggests if you're a '11 alumni (I'm a 2001), then you haven't been through the suffering that I and others have. I went to just about every home game from post death penalty through the Cavan era before moving to NC. That suffering makes the June Jones Era pretty damn nice in my opinion.
GO PONIES.

He may have been incorrect about the number but they have not been that good. Check the current class now and see where we rank in the AAC. But we can definitely beat bad teams.

Which is better than losing to bad teams like we used to before Jones arrived.

I thought you said you wanted to take the next step. By the way, we did lose to Tulane last year and are only 6-26 against teams with winning records. In case you have not heard June has sold his house and is not expected back next year. So you may have to get over your JJ fixation sooner than later and move on.

You thought correctly. I do want to take the next step. Beating bad teams is a step up from where we were before Jones arrived. The next step would be to start beating "good" teams and if Jones is the man that does that great. If not, it's still the next step and Jones has helped get the program to the point where ought to be able to make that step. Not fixated on Jones, just thankful for where he's taken us to...somewhere no other coach since the death penalty has been able to get us to.

He also tried to mess over us in the ASU fiasco. If he does not want to be here we should let him go.

That wasn't my argument, but here's my thoughts on that. Jones has earned a lot of respect from me by what he's done with our program. How he handled ASU took a chunk of that respect, but I still am grateful for his overall body of work since he's been here.

If he leaves, I'd wish him well, and be thankful for what he's done for the program, whereas I think many would not.

IM SORRY YOU ALL HAVE SHORT TERM MEMORY BUT BEFORE JJ BROUGHT YALL TO 4 STRAIGHT BOWL GAMES YALL HAD NOT BEEN TO ONE SINCE THE 80'S. NO ONE RESPECTED OR CARED ABOUT SMU. LOSING GAMES WAS A TRADITION.

WITH ALL THAT SAID I HATE THE WAY YOU HATE ON JJ LIKE HE IS THE REASON YALL LOST THE GAMES YALL SHOULD HAVE LOST THIS YEAR (TEXAS TECH, TCU, TEXAS A&M).

ITS REALITY! YOU ARE NOT A BIG TIME SCHOOL YET

WHY HASNT ANY ONE HERE FIRED OFF ABOUT THE DEFENSE OR THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TOM MASON? IF THE DEFENSE WAS HALF WAY DECENT YOU WOULD HAVE BEAT RUGTERS AND DEFINITELY TEXAS TECH. THE DEFENSE RANKS 122 IN THE NATION POINTS AGAINST.

NO INSTEAD LETS BLAST OUR OFFENSIVE HEAD COACH WHO DOES NOTHING WITH THE DEFENSE. LETS DEMAND FOR HIS HEAD EVEN THOUGH HE BROUGHT US OUT OF THE DEAD. IF ANY ONE HERE KNEW FOOTBALL OR WATCHED PRACTICE YOU WOULD BE DEMANDING FOR MASONS HEAD. YOU WOULD WANT JUNE TO BRING IN SOMEONE WITH LIFE ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE! THATS WERE THE "NON MOTIVATING" IS COMING FROM. DEFENSE

OFFENSE IS ON PACE TO DO GREAT THINGS AT THE END OF THE SEASON AS IT ALL IS GELLING. COMPLETE TURN AROUND FROM LAST YEAR. THATS BECAUASE JUNE FIXED IT BRINGING IN MUMME, NOW GET RID OF MASON AND BRING IN A NEW DC AND SMU WILL WIN 7 MAYBE EVEN 9 GAMES NEXT YEAR!

Mack Brown fired his defensive coordinator. If June is unhappy with the defense fire Mason. At least that would show he cared about defense.

If we don't have players to compete with Tcu tech and A and M or Baylor for that matter it cause the coach doesn't care enough to recruit against those teams. Can't blame the lack of talent if you recruited that talent.

Mountain mustang, you might have disproven my range as I will admit I was guessing and weighing it in a negative bias based on our current recruiting class. However the range isn't the issue I'm trying to convey it's the overall quality of our recruiting classes that are abysmal. I just looked and we have a whopping 7 count it 7 3* and those are our top recruits the other 15 are below 3* which is awful... That's my point is his recruiting classes really haven't deviated that much except it would have had he not f-ed up 2011... Those are going to carry over to the next coach which will suck. That's where most of my anger lies is that he sucks at the one thing coaches need to be amazing at in this game... So I wouldn't say my argument was a load of bull per se... Yes I think the Hawaii bowl and armed forces bowl are gimmes. You say you have to crawl before you walk but yet a 4 year old seems to make quicker process than us. We look like we will never run nor walk as it comes to full circle. Worst coach is a stretch I admit but he's sure acting like it with his apathy to the program.

I will say my criticism of him has been overwhelming. I will admit I have a football with his signature along with the recent signature of ED that I will continue to have on my desk so obviously I don't hate the guy. I just expected more out of a guy who says he's God-fearing man that wants to make something special here but them turns and runs to ASU for more money and prestige then come back and not change nor get better at his job. That is why I'm so critical of a guy that I once greatly admired.

Though I haven't suffered with y'all in the dark ages, I think y'all need newer alums to get you forward thinking. Coming from a winning only school like Carroll, I want the same for SMU. I wish I had the power to go in and shake up this very conservative don't want to take risks CoC peeps. We need to be like IBM in a way. Big computer maker ( when we were in SWC) then got killed by companies like Intel ( getting kicked out and not invited to Big 12) now make a whole new business line in risk management of data storage (get coaches in that keep pushing the program). We can't afford to sit and be satisfied with mediocrity. We need to take risks and adapt to our situation.

The bottom line is June is gone at the end of the year. If he does not win 7 or 8 games(including a bowl) he will be fired or more realistically we will announce he is retiring - he will then coach Hawaii next year. Assuming he does finish with 7 or 8 wins he will still be gone because he will not sign a contract extension. We cannot go past January 1, 2014 with a coach going into the last year of his contract. June does not want to be here; he is just making sure he leaves with that last $2MM plus. Turner understands the importance of SMU being part of the big picture in college sports - P5. The COC will take care of the buyout - possibly even 1 or 2 members of the COC. Another option would be for the school to handle the buyout and let the COC focus on the new coach.

I agree the stage is set for JJ to resign and return to Hawaii. That program has fallen back to 0-7 and is no longer competitive. It will be another Chris Ault story (2 stints as Nevada's coach). JJ will return to Hawaii (where he has already disclosed he will retire) and once again resurrect that program to respectability before he retires

And yes, when that happens, we should all appreciate JJ for what he did for SMU football. Bottom line is that we are now at least recognized by the national media for having played in 4 consecutive bowl games (with 3 very impressive wins, I might add) and we should all be thankful for that. However, I'm among those who think he could have done a lot more. I think JJ underestimated how difficult a job this would be. He came in here riding high after taking Hawaii to a BCS game and thought recruits would be knocking down our door for an opportunity to play here. I don't think he appreciated the level of competition for Texas H.S. talent and how little support (fan wise) SMU had compared to our competition. While some don't want to acknowledge it as fact, our lack of fans really hurts recruiting

If they don't step into the stadium, they aren't SMU football fans. We should stop pointing at the Boulevard and saying "look at all those bad fans not going to the game!" They don't count. Those are prospective fans, that we aren't capturing.

At LSU they do go to the stadium, it's just that any opposing fan needs a raincoat (for stuff thrown at you to roll off) and a bullet proof vest. Such a classy bunch, only rivaled by Gators.
