Herman Challenges UH FansModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Herman Challenges UH FansAre we doing anything similar to the Baylor Line with students? I mean, why not give something like that a shot?
I'm not saying do the exact thing, but there has to be something more we can do than just hope students show up.
Re: Herman Challenges UH FansI think the new dorms adjacent to Ford will be a huge step in increasing student and ultimately alumni involvement and support for athletics. It starts with improving student attendance and I agree that Baylor has done a great job with their Frosh program, but SMU needs to work on the entire student body. I've been following SMU athletics since the early 60's (was a neighbor of Hayden Fry & Tom Landry) before attending SMU in the early 70's and Stallion is right about the long term apathy issue. Only one of my frat bros/close friends has season tickets and several others who still live in Dallas only attend games when I come into town and force them to come out with me. It's not that they aren't sports fans, it's just that they would prefer to spend their weekends doing something else. For whatever reason, SMU has not attracted the die hard fans that most other schools have been able to attract. Those who were around and participated in the Mustang Mania campaign know how difficult it was to attract the casual fan even with the thousands of tickets we gave away in those years. Bottom line is that we will probably need to bring back that kind of marketing effort to fill Ford for most of our AAC games or for any opponents who don't bring a large contingent of their own fans.
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
We tried to do the "Mustang 11" but we can't even get 11 students to show up for a lot of games.
Re: Herman Challenges UH FansWhat we really need to do is thump Baylor in the first game like we did UConn when Moody opened up.
Since that's obviously not happening....any other ideas?
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
Morris has come up with a couple things that are intriguing and may help solidify a growing trend of getting students to the stands. We'll see; I don't want to say anything that hasn't been announced publicly because maybe it's been changed.
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
We need to at least hang with them. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans^^^This and TCU, too.
Re: Herman Challenges UH FansChad Morris did more in 1 month to reach out to student organizations than all football coaches combined-so hopefully that reaps some fruit
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
That'd be a first.
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
Agreed, I remember how quickly everyone's enthusiasm died a few years ago when we opened at Baylor. Need to give them a good game for sure or else it will be "here we go again" with many. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
But who could possibly expect us to 'give them a good game' or 'be competitive' when everyone admits the talent gap is enormous, their offense is a machine, their D-Line (arguably one of the best in the country) vs. our O-Line is frightening, we have a new staff, new offense, new defense, true freshmen could be playing, etc, etc.... Unless there is a 5-1 turnover margin in our favor, no one in their right mind should expect this to be close, or be disappointed with a 'here we go again' attitude. Unfortunately many probably will. People just need to show up and support, no matter the Baylor or TCU final scores.
Re: Herman Challenges UH FansGive them a good game = not 1 yard per play avg.

No reason that can't be us. I don't expect to win either of the big early season games, but I do expect the team to play hard and look like a legit FBS squad in the process. That's not asking too much.
Re: Herman Challenges UH Fans
We have managed to capture lightning in a bottle with our basketball program. For decades, there was no buzz whatsoever around it, even when we had somewhat decent teams. Quite suddenly, with LB's arrival, the Moody renovation, and terrific teams, SMU basketball now has the attention of the whole city--not just alumni. Stallion is right that we've always struggled with attendance in football, but things can change quickly and new traditions can be established. I don't think consistently drawing 30K fans to Ford is out of the question, if HCCM can execute on his vision. No doubt that will have to include finding ways to energize the student population, probably for the first time in school history. It can be done.
Re: Herman Challenges UH FansBeating the point spread vs Baylor would be a start. Be within 30?
