And I haven't.

I've got a shocking story. I went into an Exxon "On the Run" store the other day to purchase a (losing) lotto ticket. As I stood at the counter looking around, I saw a prominent display of university "doo-rags"/bandanas (let's say bandana)... they had ATM, Tejas, and OU and lo' and behold... S M U! YEP! Right there with the big boys. White background with a Red Runnin' Mustang and a bold SMU. $5.99. I have no idea what I am going to do with it, but there is so much griping about our stuff not being available, I had to buy it.
Where was this Exxon 'On the Run" store? Wow. Is SMU trying to horn in on the 'gang-banger' market? ![]()
Not sure why everyone is up in arms about the lack of SMU stuff in the stores. Are you having trouble getting the stuff you want? Everyone obviously has a computer and can order whatever they want online. Or are you concerned that the general public can't get the SMU stuff they want? Guess what--the general public doesn't want it, or it would already be in the stores.
Basic demand governs the availability. I doubt very seriously this a lack of effort on SMU's part--rather a lack of interest on the consumers' part. I mean, we've put a football team out there for 16 straight years since the death penalty and the general public has shown no interest in that either....
They think that the presence of SMU gear in stores will make people want to buy it more. This might be true if SMU was a mid-major program, but EVERYONE either 1. doesn't know SMU is even in Dallas, or 2. knows SMU football is a joke. We are considered DI-AA or less by the average person. Winning suddenly made TCU gear appear everywhere, including the ghetto alberson's on forest in garland, so winning will do the same to us.
While I know everyone is throwing in his/her two cents regarding the new look of the SMU Athletics Logo, I think one more opinion won't hurt. Personally, I really like the new stuff. I never thought adding an italicized slant to the old block lettering would acutally add anything, but it does. The new logo is aggressive, edgy, and frankly unafraid; the old lettering had become passe, boring, and rather unintimidating. The truth of the matter is is that we should not even have to be having these arguments: marketing should have done a hell of a lot more to draw the student body and the alumni into the decision-making process. Yes, focus groups were used; however, I hold that a campus-wide contest involving SMU's marketing/advertising majors would have provided for an even better look. Instead, it seems the athletic department opted to roll this thing out without thoroughly testing the waters, especially with respect to PonyFans such as yourself. That being said, we should embrace what has already occured, because it isn't going to change. Furthermore, all these conversations about the loss of the running mustang are pointless: the running mustang will continue to be THE image of SMU athletics. Sure, some variations may occur, like the mustang jumping over the SMU letters or what have you; however, these are simply designed to give students the option of wearing something a little more fun and avant-garde to the games, if they so choose. Athletics will stick with the running mustang, as it should, and it will incorporate wording that is bold rather than what has become, rightly or wrongly, boring and basic. I applaud athletics for trying something new; however, I do wish they would have tried to bring more people into the process. Now, because we really should keep our eyes on the ball here, I say that we all take what we have, do everything we can to assist athletics, and remember that no amount of bickering over logos is going to change the fact that we should be discussing who made the best play or why so-and-so didn't make that catch. Enough with the disappointment--there's just too much of that to go around as it is anyway.
Do you mean if they so choose to wear it or so choose to attend the games? Welcome to ponyfans, Imperator.
Embrace this......
If they want to wear something that looks like the new logo, they have the option of wearing Boise State clothes, if they so choose.
