Care? Nope..
I heard they're terrible anyway.. What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
As the Sudler trophy cannot be awarded to the same band twice, it should
not be construed as an award to the "Best Band in the Nation" (from ramb website) If the award could go to a university multiple times, the first 7 winners or so would probably have it between them every year, they are still "the best bands in the ncaa"... 1982 University of Michigan 1983 University of Illinois 1984 The Ohio State University 1985 Florida A&M University 1986 University of Texas at Austin 1987 University of Oklahoma 1988 Michigan State University 1989 Kansas University 1990 University of Iowa 1991 Arizona State University 1992 Northwestern University 1993 University of California at Los Angeles 1994 James Madison University 1995 Purdue University 1996 University of Nebraska 1997 West Virginia University 1998 University of Massachusetts 1999 Texas Tech University 2000 University of Georgia 2001 Texas A&M University
I said the award was a close equivalent, not an actual NC.
It is my understanding that it is not as of yet handed out to any band that asks for it. So my point remains. As a band alum, you will find me unusually picky about this. And when I die
You can bury me
In Lubbock, Texas,
In my jeans.
-Mac Davis
If you like the silly hat, boring music, lots of woodwinds, multiple glocenshpeels (sp?), highschoolish but bigger, fat flag waiver kind of thing. Personally there are only three bands in the state that can keep me from grabbing a beer on the boulevard -
SMU - (of course) - good tunes, loudest per perporformer, rich tradition, actually march instead of shuffle. A&M - I know they just follow each other around, but it is cool to watch and I have always liked Patton. Rice - sometimes the nerdiness just can't stay hidden - but they can sometimes be very funny. Horrible music but who cares. Baylor, TCU, Tech, Texas, UH etc are all just boring highschool nonsense. I can't believe they can get any college age person to actually put on those uniforms in public - especially anything with a friggin plume on it.
As a band alum from high school, I have to say that The Mustang Band *rocks*! (Yes, I'm biased!) This is the band that made me start listening to Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodwin, Al Hirt, etc. back in the 60s and 70s and eventually inspired me to take up the trombone. The MB also knew how to play tunes by Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears and Tower of Power! And the MB uniforms were cool...even the Mr. Peppermint outfits! I guess my high school band's uniqueness (brass, wind, percussion and BAGPIPES!) made me appreciate the MB's uniqueness, too. All the other high school and college bands were left in our dust!
respectfully disagree with my brethren here. i think UT and TT's bands are very collegiate, terrific and fun to watch/listen to. i'm disappointed that tech's band won't be at the game bands are part of what separates college ball from pro ball, at least for me.
i'll agree that baylor and particularly TCU are nothing but high school redux.
I really cant stand show/corp bands. SMU is really one of the few ones I actually care for. That Longview Military Marching has spoiled me

The same way we beat them these past two years
![]() Thank god that is an away game...Dont have to miss the game but oo well last year didnt put me down as we play OSU that week ![]() ![]()
OK, just to clarify, the Mustang Band has MANY different uniform combos, the candy-stripe coat being in a couple of them. We also wear red blazers, blue blazers, different vests underneath, bow ties, regular ties, and white or blue pants.
Last year, I think we wore the candy-stripe coat ONCE, out of 9 games (x2 combos a game=18 total combos) so I don't understand how fans get all bent out of shape that the band needs to lose the "Mr Peppermint look". It was in 1/18 of the uniforms we wore last year. Plus, I think they're definitely unique and look kinda snazzy. AND who would Bryan Adams High School copy if we got rid of the candy-stripes. Is their green-white jacket called the "Mr Spearmint look"? And on the topic of the "Sudler Trophy" I think that thing is bunk, because how can so many DIFFERENT and UNIQUE college bands all be judged by the same standard? How can you say TAMU is better in one season than Stanford? They are total opposites of each other in terms of style (military vs scramble), yet don't they both serve their purpose of entertaining the crowd? Tons of fans LOVE the Rice MOB, so how does total unknown James Madison University (honestly how many of you had even heard of their band) get to be declared THE BEST COLLEGE MARCHING BAND? My point is that college bands are unique and cater to their own fans, it's not like high school where you go to competitions, get judged on the same scale, and receive a score out of 100 so you can compare who is actually 'better'. From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
