Can Phillips still get a medical redshirt? I thought once he played in the third game it's too late for that.

It is 20% of the snaps or somesuch. Phillips should qualify.

See part c

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver
A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 8/8/02)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institution or occurs subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)

(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 4/3/02)

(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 20 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled competition (including exempted events except for scrimmages and exhibition contests identified as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04)

3 games is more than 2 games and more than 20%. I hope we don't lose him for the season.

If Phillips is limited by that injury and believe me it can limit arm strength then this kind of thing needed to happen (going for a red-shirt.)

We have got to stretch the field or nothing will happen so thankfully we did get those two JC QBs or we would really be stuck.

Using google, I looked at a lot of websites, which I am too lazy to link to. While I would say that none of the websites are authoritative (mostly fansites), they are all consistent-the 20% is rounded up to the next whole number. 20% of 11 games is 2.2 games. Rounding up, that is three games. Ergo, Phillips should qualify for a medical hardship waiver.

I wasn't sure how they rounded either, but section b refered to the first half of the season. There was also an explicit example for that one which said that the sixth game of an 11 game season was not in the first half. This would lead me to believe that they round down. But either way, I hope we get Phillips back, if not healthy this year, then healthy and more experienced next year.

Maybe someone should put in a call to Ramon Flanigan for pointers on understanding this medical hardship thing. Now, if...and this is a big if...Eckert or Romo light it up as this year goes one, what happens next year? Either QB controversy (the best we could hope for) or Chris Sanders/ R.J. Meeks/ Josh McCown story rides again.

I would prefer having too many good QB's to too few. And TT and Boise seem to have gotten past that. Funny how winning helps people stay and wait for their day in the sun. Let's hope that one of our two QB's light it up. They would be seniors next year, Phillips would be a redshirt freshman or at worst a sophomore. If they don't, then Phillips gets to start next year.

How do you figure? He used a year last year, and possibly his second this year. That would make him a junior, or at best a sophomore.

I think Phillips might have been slightly hurt coming into the season. His arm's throwing angle this season seemed much lower than last year on in high school this season. He looked as if he was shot putting the ball and not throwing it. Maybe he already had a slight injury and the hit in the TCU game just magnified the problem.
