A few /two to three/ years ago I wrote to Dr. Turner about a SMU history course that would be manditory for freshmen. That would include knowing the fight song. Previous championships and the up's and down's would be highlighted as a what is right and wrong with athletics.

Yes, I got a nice letter back and nothing was done.

Aside from the little factual oddities and the decision to endlessly re-hash the DP (just in case anyone had moved on), how about the general writing? Shawn Heilbron becomes "Hellibron" or something within two paragraphs.

And it took FOURTEEN people to write that. Maybe they need 14 editors.

What do you expect? I doubt anyone on that staff will win a pulitzer prize for their creative excellence in the field of journalism. The only thing the DC is good for is lining bird cages.

I say bring back streaking. And hint that there will be a mass streak sometime during the game. There will be plenty of students there out of curiosity if nothing else. So what if it turns out to be one drunken freshman who got conned into it. When streaking was at it pinnacle virtually the entire freshman quad was filled with virually the entire student body upon RUMOR of a mass streak (which of course never happened).[/url]

Even at the winning game this saturday, i saw a lot of people leaving early? WHY you ask?
BECAUSE IT WAS BARGING INTO THEIR DRINKING TIME!
At SMU the game is a social event, and excuse to see people and get drunk. Win or lose, a lot of people just don't care as long as they get laid by the end of the night

It's just sad...

Hey that picture is my back!!!

I am one of the Mustang 11.
IMHO spirit is contagious. I know that when my fellow classmates (especially those from the class of '08 ) get pumped up when they see fans like us going absolutely nuts, whether we win or lose.

I am going to do everything in my power to get as many students in the seats as I can. One area that I think is somewhat overlooked, is the attendance of alumni. There should definitely be more alumni filling up Ford stadium.

I also got to sit in on a SMAC meeting, and there are lots of creative ideas being thrown around to boost attendance among students. Some of these ideas will be devolped into some major events for the future.

Also, like others have said, the sale of alcohol would obviously boost ticket sales, but let's not get into that.....

Of course a football game is a social event. All sports are about society and entertainment. SMU needs fans at the stadium at ALL the games. Who cares if they are drunk off their butts? You can't complain about people leaving before the end of the game. That is their prerogative.

Let's just control everyone's minds because my intentions are the best intentions for being at a football game. I think Uri Gellar is available.

Yes it is their perogative, but it sure shows their priorities. It is more important to get an extra hour of sitting around before party time than to stay to support the team. (Although the retention rate was much better for this last game) A good solution is beer in the stadium....either sold or allowed to be brought in. But that is a dead, dead, dead horse to beat.

Not sure who you are, but something tells me you're a freshman. Just wait until homecoming and see if you still think this way.

I agree. It seems like the newspaper could find someone who has at least passed a high school composition class. And maybe they could find a chimp to start editing, because it couldn't get much worse and it's bound to be funnier.

Also, I was next to the student section and with about a minute left in the first quarter a few sorority girls walked by and one said "We already signed in, do we have to stay?" That's the right attitude.

There is a spirit conpetition for student organizations (including frats & sororities) at Homecoming. Not only do they not count the attendance at the actual game (at least not beyond kick off -- it is based on attendance at the parade, some other pre-game events, and the float), but they don't count attendance the rest of the games leading up to Homecoming. Sometimes when the winner is announced at halftime, there's all of 5 people from the organization there to cheer for their "victory." I have suggested that attendance at the game be the primary indication of spirt and count the most toward the competition, and I think attendance at all of the preceding games should count as well. I doubt this will happen though, because it is my understanding that there has been resistance to even the game attendance requirement.

Winning cures a lot!!! The SJS game was much more enjoyable than the two a$$-whippings at TCU and OSU. Who can really blame the students for not wanting to attend games when the team is going to get killed? Most of our alumni have the same problem - games are not that enjoyable when the team is getting destroyed every game. If Bennett can show that this team can compete and start winning, fans will come back. Is it realistic that we sell out Ford every game - probably not. However, if SMU can start drawing 25K from fans/alumni/students/visting fans for games that don't have rent-a-fans (Tech, A$M, etc) Ford Stadium would have a pretty good atmosphere.

^^exactly!

couch 'em - You can't expect people to care. Especially when the people all have ADHD! I do want people to come. Maybe if the sororities and frats at SMU have a better support system for the games, people would come and stay.

I think that the frats and sororities are very important to the support of athletics. I remember back in the late 80's and early 90's, they seemed to support both football and mens basketball much better than they do today.

There was a Pike sitting with several Pi Phi's behind me on the press box side at the SJSU game. God, was he drunk! Of course, it's the only time he'll ever be in the presence of that many Pi Phi's at once so I'm sure he was trying to savor the moment as best as he could. *LOL*
