The football program gets lots of support from alums and friends, baseball did not. Men's track did not. That is why they are gone and they will not return unless someone dumps so much money on the school limited solely to baseball (and to fund a companion Title IX sport like softball or women's lacrosse) that the school has no choice but to go forward. Otherwise, you would add baseball and softball, lose football and the support for it as well. No doubt football loses money every year, but it does get lots more donations for the school than probably all of the other sports combined.

Update on DMN web site from Tuesday night.

An SMU student who fractured his skull when he was struck by a goal post during a football celebration Saturday has been upgraded to fair condition.

Garrett W. Haake, 19, was previously listed in guarded condition at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, according to a statement released Monday by Southern Methodist University.

His parents could not be reached Tuesday.

Jason Arnold, a first-year SMU student who is friends with Mr. Haake, said that he was told the Spring, Texas, sophomore did not suffer brain damage.

"He is still in the ICU and will stay there for another day or two so the swelling can dissipate and the doctors can decide what to do about the fractured skull," Mr. Arnold said.

Mr. Haake was part of a crowd that celebrated SMU's victory Saturday night over San Jose State. The win ended a 15-game losing streak.

Fans tried to tear down the north goal post at Ford Stadium before being stopped by police. About 100 fans, including Mr. Haake, raced down the field and proceeded to rip down the south goal post.

Mr. Haake was hit on the head when the goal post tipped. He lay bleeding in the end zone for several moments before he was taken to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.

SMU officials said they're reviewing the university's post-game security procedures by looking at video and photos of Saturday's celebration. Additionally, they are considering a collapsible goal post to replace the one torn down.

Mr. Haake, a sophomore majoring in broadcast journalism and political science, would like to anchor network news or host his own TV show after graduation, according to a school Web page about the Charles S. Sharp Endowed President's Scholar. President's Scholars receive full-tuition scholarships. About 20 are selected a year.

Mr. Haake is also an ambassador for the university's Student Foundation and former member of Mustang 11, a cluster of 11 first-year students selected to promote school spirit and traditions.

He was listed on SMU's honor roll with high distinction both semesters last year, according to information posted on the school's Web site.

Glad to hear he's doing better. But I must correct the story, there were MAYBE 25 students who went down to the south endzone, no WAY it was a hundred. They were initially just testing to see what the 4-5 policemen would do, and when they didn't do anything, the small group ran on to the goal post. It was brought down with just 1 person on it.

I must correct the story. There were probaly 40 on the south goal. And I was the first one up (in the middle) and it broke and came down when 2 of my big friends hit the leftside at the same time.
