Some on this board almost delight in spreading the doom and gloom. They are surely being realistic, but why do they always so quickly jump on those who are trying to be optimistic and upbeat? (Climbs down off soapbox)

Perhaps they have a need to reinforce their feelings of superiority over those who would dare to ignor reality and enjoy a little sunshine from time to time.

It is probably due to the fact that the program has won one game out of the last 17. I do think that three wins is totally possible this year and would certainly show progress for the program - it is still a little too early to start talking about going to bowl games.

Gents- I am as hopeful as the next guy but talking about bowls after 1 win in ESPN's Pillow Fight of the Week? Let's hope for continued improvement and that these guys put on muscle before next year. I would have thought that a 2 game winning streak would have been a minimum for even the most optimistic to start talking bowls. Get a grip before you go outside this friendly forum talking bowls. You might be arrested and kept so you don't hurt yourselves.

Ladies!

Postby geephunk » Mon Oct 04, 2004 4:47 pm

Sunshine here! Just wanted to clear the air for all those west Texans that misunderstood me earlier. By no means do I think the team is ready for any type of bowl game at this point in time. HOWEVER (that is the key word), if (another key word) we were to win the next 5 out of 6, do you think (I know it is hard for some of you) some selection committee would consider us worthy of a bowl game considering the fact that it has been about 20 years since we went to a bowl game and also considering the fact that we were 6-5 a few years ago and didn't get an invite to any bowl game. The only reasonable reply I have heard so far was that we might not get an invite (if we went 6-5) due to our fan base and ability to travel.

Message to the board: Take comfort in the fact that some of us on the board are smart, intelligent fans of college football. Beating SJSU in no way makes us a great team. I would like to think that accidents happen to even the best and worst of us. And I sure hope we accidently fall into a win streak that includes 5 of the next 6.

By the way, born in raised in big D!

Yours truly,

Sunshine.

Sometimes I think that if SMU were to turn its misfortune around, some of the posters on this board would not know what to do anymore! Their wives don't want to hear them, their co-workers won't have anymore of it, your friends are sick and tired of it. And without ponyfans, there wouldn't be a forum for you [deleted] and moan. Good day, Ladies.

Personally, I think this "irrational exuberance" comes from 2 areas:

[1] A) Our SJSU decisive win (more so with SJSU 70-Rice 63);
B) A solid 2nd half effort against #19 BSU (yeah 4Q was 2nd team).

[2] the "WACK" WAC... LaTech knocks off Fresno... Rice beats Hawaii then stinks it up v. SJSU... Tulsa 1-4... There are reasons to be hopeful.

In the same breath, this young team is trying find a way to win with an injury-plagued defense & an offense that struggles to put together consecutive 1st downs.

So, other than staying positive, we should all show up @ Rice and help these guys find win #2!

IMO, this WAC season is a two-tier conference:
[1] the haves- Boise, Fresno, Hawaii(maybe)
[2] the rest of us.

Tulsa 04 is NOT Tulsa 03;
Rice- anybody who gives up 70 to SJSU is suspect;
Nevada- another SJSU
UTEP- this team is not Mike Price's guys (yet)

LaTech- could be trouble-but we're @ home; maybe Moats misses the bus

Exactly what I was thinking..Personally the best I expect us to go is 4 out of the 6. 3 out of the 6 I would love but 4 out of 6 I would go crazy for.

Its hard to imagine winning 5 or 6 games, but I guess lightning does strike, look at Tulsa last year. They were as far down as we are now and got some confidence somehow and got on a roll. I find it very interesting how they have fallen off again this year with real bad losses to Kansas and Hawaii.

Back in 93 Smu caught fire the last part of the season to finish a respectable 5-6. That was a special group of seniors though. Why don't we seem to have senior classes like that anymore? Seems like our classes fizzle out lately rather than growing together. Thats not a knock on Bennett either, more of an observation from the carry over from the Cavan era and transition to now.

Taking an outside perspective, Sagarin, right now we would be favored by 4 and 5 points in our home games against Nevada and Tulsa. Three other teams would be a touchdown favorite against us, give or take a point, Rice, La Tech, and UTEP, and that is taking home and away into consideration.

Therefore, without being a total sunshiner, one could say we have a good shot at five teams. We need to work hard, improve and get a break or two and we could win four, that is my most optimistic hope. On the other hand if we get a few more injuries or self destruct we could be 2-9. I do not expect worse than that.

Rice is a pivotal game. Winning that game would propel us.

Let me address it this way and try to avoid the "sunshine" label. Boise wins the conference hands down. With one conference loss, 2nd place is still possible. Bowl bid unlikely with current attendance.

With the topsy-turvy nature of the WAC this year (Fresno's loss, et al) anything is possible.

Ponygrad, the oddsmakers say Rice by 14 today. They are usually pretty educated. Its a little disappointing its that high based on the relative San Jose scores, but they must have their reasons.

We have always had trouble with an option type offense. I don't know much about Rice, but if that is the offense they are running, we could have some trouble.

Using Sagarin's "Predictor" rating you still only get about 8.5 and the is still biased by last season which when taken out should work to our benefit.

My guess is that the 14pt spread is either based on our reputation from last season or they do not think we can keep up with Rice in a scoring slugfest.

HELLO the reason we don't have senior classes like in 1993 was because we graduated 38 lettermen with about 75 years or more of starting experience. That year is a complete aberration.

Hoops, "smart money" was way wrong on us last week, too. They bid the points up to what, 37 1/2 by game time? Let's hope they're wrong, again. I still think we not only cover-- we bring a W back from Rice.
