Phillips to tight end...finally. if he works at it, that can be productive for both he and the team.

Can you imagine having Phillips line-up as a wide-out or tight end? That is an interesting idea.. i wonder how receptive he would be to something like that? I would guess it's been discussed with him for Bennett to state something like that.. ? Or perhaps it was an off the cuff kind of statement?

Regardless.. interesting that he would throw that out there..

Personally, I still think Phillips has a future at QB. Nevertheless, he is too good an athlete to keep off the field. If Bennett thinks Phillips can't beat out Romo or Eckert this year, I am glad BEnnett is trying to find another way to get him in the game.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

After Eckert throws about 9 INTs and gets sacked about 15 times- a conservative estimate- against Baylor, A&M and TCU the QB position will change just like it has for each and every year in the last decade.

Isn't it amusing that our only "PonyFans.com Legend" is such a sour puss.

I think that would be fantastic! You up for it Doobs? ('Cause we sure as poop know Stallion's not.) Unfortunately, I think our student body would be too busy trying to score to storm the pressbox and demand the head of Alfredo Garcia, er... Stallion.

Food for thought:
When Phillips was recruited, I spoke with his high school coach at Bishop Lynch. Coach Oliver said all the things you'd expect a coach to say about his player, about how he thinks Phillips will be great at SMU, thinks he'll end up being the starting quarterback, etc. But at the end of the interview, he said: "I think he'll be the starting quarterback there one day, but if that doesn't work out, he's definitely a good enough athlete that he could play other positions. He could be a very good wide receiver, or even a tight end. He's got huge hands, and I think before he's finished growing, he's going to be 6'4" or 6'5" and somewhere around 245 pounds." He also said then that he thinks Phillips has the ability to be "an NFL-caliber tight end."

see stallion, you and phil are not so different. both of you have tried to make chris into a QB for years on the college level. what makes phil a coach and you a lawyer is...and a wonderful lawyer i am sure... he knows when the project is over.

well then Phil Bennett's career will soon be over because we have no QBs in the forseeable future who are going to take this team anywhere. If he doesn't transfer because of Bennett STUPID COMMENT we'll see who QB at the end of the year when Bennett realizes his career is on the line in 2006 and he doesn't have a QB to play that critical year. . Any coach that gives up on a QB with great potential coming out the private school (read 2A-3A) level after 2 seasons can't coach. Hey Phil Bennett doesn't have any street cred when it comes to picking QBs anyway. The guy actually thought Tate Wallis could play.

I think Dandyfan may be reading something into Bennetts comment that isn't there. What Bennett said, according to the report at the beginning of this thread, is "He said that Phillip's injury has put him behind in the new offense. He asked if I had seen him lately and said he is going 238. He is number 3 right now and we may see him at tight end." If Phillips is behind in learning the offence and if he isn't totally rehabed from his injury, he is too good an athlete not to have him on the field and for this year having him play as a reciever might be a good way to get him into the action. That does not preclude him from playing QB in 2006 and 2007 (I believe he has gotten a redshirt year out of last year...right?).

My impression from Coach Bennett comment about Phillips was that he wanted him to get on the field, not that he was out as QB. He also wants there to plenty of depth at QB, given our difficulties at the position over the last few years. He now has that depth and even more with adding the two freshman recruits. I think he likes the senority of Romo and Eckert. He was clear that he wanted to settle on one of them and not alternate them like he did last year.

It is just damn nice to see that he has some viable options now unlike the last couple of years.
