Well, if you knew when he said it, why'd you ask?

Because the statement you made does not jive with the statement I heard. I have never heard the coaches say that his future here does not lie in the QB position. Only that he is not ready for the QB position this year. So again, when did they say what you report them as saying?

Look, mince words if you want, but I told you where I heard it and you acknowledged it was said and they specific enough to mention at least one other position. And if you recall, PK, we DO have a history of running off QBs. Now, all that coupled with the fact that Phillips is apparently showing a sudden lack of interest....

Look law boy...there is a difference between "this year" and "his future here does not lie in the quarterback position."

Phillips

Postby aus10fromhous10 » Wed Jun 29, 2005 3:30 am

Anybody ever considered the idea that Chris Phillips was never really that injured and that they medical red shirted him so that they could make up for having to start him his freshman year, especially after the poor job he did at the beginning of last season? The aftermath of him being benched was that he didn't stay in shape the rest of the season and throughout the school year. Is it possible that was the situation, and if so, is he just mad at the coaches for benching him, thus leading him to be less interested in attending workouts, etc. I don't want to be too much of a conspiracy theorist, but its not all that unimaginable of an explanation.

The bottom line is that we need players who live for football! While we certainly have had a few that have over the past 15 years, it is hard to tell if the majority of our players do - especially when compared to other schools. When was the last time UT, FSU, Florida, etc, etc had a starting QB leave to be in a rock band? To often, SMU players are busy joking around on the sidelines like they really don't care about what is going on out on the field. If Chris is choosing not to stay in shape, attend workouts, etc....then he deserves to be riding the pine and get chalked up as another wasted scholarship on a player who doesn't live up to the hype around them. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that has happened at SMU.

I think it's a very plausible explanation, I thought the same thing.

No, the QB's at FSU get arrested in the middle of the street, wearing only their boxers, stoned out of their minds while proclaiming they are "God."

I have always thought this and I have always thought Bennett made it very clear to Phillips when the season started that he had three games to prove he was ready to be the starter and if not, he was going to get "injured" and have to redshirt.

I am not saying this is not true but I can't believe Bennett would willingly let Meeks transfer if Phillips were taking the lazy route.

I agree with the speculation about Phillips being gray-shirted. He's got a "bum shoulder" .. coupled with the fact you've got 2 JUCO QB's that will start ahead of him right now.. one can throw and one can run.

Next year you've got Justin entering the mix for QB with Phillips having a year to "recover" physically, take-in the playbook and compete for QB.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

I highly doubt they're related. Without crawling around inside Coach Bennett's head, I would bet that he treated each individually. It's not like either was his only QB, but it's also not like either was challenging Matt Lineart or Jason White for Heisman and All-America contention. Like all coaches, Coach Bennett has said many times that he wants many talented QBs, and I would assume he'll keep adding to his collection.
