5 wins=is a reach,4 wins=we should,3 wins=we better or else.Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower there is no reason SMU should not expect to be competitive with Baylor at home. That is not a dream to beast Baylor. Baylor's recruiting has picked up especially last year but few if any of those kids will be on the field. TCU I feel is absolutely loaded at the offensive skill positions so I wouldn't count on a victory agaist the Froggies althoughy we certain so do better than last year. TCU's still got plainly better personnel although the gap i9s somewhat narrowing.
Except that Baylor beat us, albeit barely, during our winless season of 2003. They have improved more than SMU since that win, have they not?
have they? that SMU team was awful and could not punch itself out of a paper bag. Baylor's record has also been helped by some victories over some pretty bad programs see Texas St. last year who they barely squeeked by last year I think on a late Int. Another victory in 2003 was against Sam Houston St -wasn't it- the week before we played them. They did beat NTSU last year but got stomped the year before. This is a game we need to win PERIOD. Baylor has a hell of a lot less firepower than TCU.
Yes, Sam Houston played Baylor at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco the week before the Mustangs in 2003. The Bearkats were defeated by the Bears, 27-6. The Bearkats didn't even score a TD in that contest.
Well, I certainly can agree with that. I hate calling any game a must-win for this team, though--what happens when the inevitable loss comes, do we man the lifeboats at 0-1?
I am going to have to include the frogs in the "games we need to win PERIOD" category. Beating them in their 1st year in the mtn goat conf., besides being quite improbable and embarrassing for them, would arguably destroy their program in the short term. And how sweet would that be. To destroy their program. It most likely won't happen. But a man can dream. I freaking HATE the frogs. Effin' smug, short-memory bastards.

Actually, Baylor was stomped by NTSU the week before we played them in 2003, 14-52. They also lost their first game that year to UAB. Baylor sucked in 2003, and they should not be any better than us this year. We would have won the 2003 game if our "QB" could lob a ball to a wide open receiver crossing the field with no one within 20 yards late in the fourth quarter instead of throwing it five yards over his head. We then proceeded to miss the late field goal that would have tied the game. This game is a "Must Win" if for no other reason that our next two opponents are much stronger than us. We cannot start the season 0-3, and a loss to the Bears would make one of the next two games a must win. That will be an uphill battle. We WILL beat the Bears. And Bennett better prepare the team for that game like his job depends on it. "Methodists do it and Baptists don't."
I think its going to be difficult to win any of the next 5 games after Baylor. 0-1 may well turn into 0-6. And I don't think I'm being overly pessimistic. Baylor is the biggest game this program has faced in a very long time.
Yup, this game is a lot like SJSU last year. Had we lost that game,
Bennett very likely was a has Bennett. We need something tangible very soon to prove that Bennett is the guy to lead us out of this hole in the ground. Can he coach his recruiting classes to produce above most of the prognosticator's expectations? Kinda like Hayden Fry did when Bennett was a childhood SMU fan like me.
Re: 5 wins=is a reach,4 wins=we should,3 wins=we better or else.
Rice is supposedly abandoning the option offense for a more fan pleasing passing oriented offense to draw in more fan attendance. Ol WishboneGuy is under fire. We shall see.
How much of this Baylor team is around from their win over TAMU last year? It is just as much of a must win game for them, because they only have two other winnable games on their schedule. Just like us it is their first game of the season. Unlike us they have all the BCS money to help them out. I just hope our guys are as prepared for them as they have been when we have started the season at home against Texas Tech, and not like we have when we started the season against Navy. I hate to be so pessimistic and anyone who knew me while I was in school would be shocked that I would even contemplate that we wouldn't win every game every year (i was quite the sunshiner)......but let's be realistic until they show us otherwise don't get your hopes up. By all means join me at the games and cheer your head off, but don't your hopes up too high yet.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
