My predictions: 2-9

L Baylor - (turnover bug kills us in a close one, don't we always lose this way in the season opener?)
L TCU - (Better athletes and they play Oklahoma in their opener)
L @ A&M - (Kyle Field & Reggie McNeil)
W Tulane - (Better than last time we played in New Orleans & no pro QB starting for Tulane this year)
L @ Marshall - (don't feel good about Huntington, WV. Home to the most backward state in the Union)
L @ UAB - (Fast break offense spills over from their Hoops team)
W ECU - (Would love to beat Skip Holtz's team)
L @ Tulsa - (We're due for loss to these guys)
L Rice - (We haven't stopped the option in a long time)
L @ Houston (Houston is much improved and we won't have pressure on the QB allowing our our secondary to be picked apart)
L UTEP - (similar to last year)
C-USA Title Game - I don't think so.

A-town: living so close to that cesspool of Teasips has steered you to 'the dark side'. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion but I hope & pray you're DEAD WRONG!

You go, A-Town. Being a favorite twice is right

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Aug 08, 2005 11:17 pm

I think SMU can only be considered a favorite against ECU and Tulsa. Maybe Tulane is weaker than I know about, but they can be trouble. Of course there is a difference between winning four games and being the favorite twice. Under Bennett in the WAC, our NC record was poor. When we won some games, it was in the weaker part of the WAC schedule. Fortunately, the C-USA West will not be very strong except for UTEP. Maybe we can get some wins in this part of our schedule. I appreciate that before the first kick-off, every team has high hopes for the coming season. I don't want to spoil that enthusiasm for anyone, but unrealistic expectations are no substitute for good recruiting and good coaching. The best predcitor of the future is usually past performance. What you see is what you get. In SMU's case, if the record is going to improve, it will be in increments; not all at once. Four wins would be a move in the right direction.

If Bennett coaches this team to a 2-9 record this year, he should resign....or at a minimum give back some of the hefty paycheck that he receives from SMU! One would have to wonder why we gave a coach a bigger paying contract and he delivered less than the guy that was fired before him!

Seriously, man, don't be gutless-- since you are willing to rail on others for having low expectations for this season, tell us what your expectations are.

My prediction encompasses a BIG IF:

IF we beat Baylor we will be 5-6.

IF we lose to Bethlehem on the Brazos, we will be hard pressed to win 3 games, so I predict 2-9. (wins over ECU and maybe Tulsa).

We must win one of our first two games, and with our past record against the Toads we better beat Baylor.

Dont' get me wrong, I hope and pray that the Mustangs finish with a winning record and have a chance to go to a bowl game this year. I'd be up there with everyone else buying bowl game tickets. However, come October for the past 10 years, I always seem to feel like Charlie Brown after Lucy's pulled the ball away.

Call it tempered enthusiasm.

Optomistically I could get to a 5-6 record, but realistically I think were 2-9. I hope I'm wrong.

For all of you predicting 2-9 or 3-8 seasons, what do you think our record would be in ’06 if we played the identical schedule?

And who will be QB?

SoCal - If we played (what I assume you to mean our '04-'05 schedule), then I'd have to predict 3-8 or maybe 4-7. We'd still be 0-3 in our nonconference against TTU, OSU & TCU and either 3-5 or 4-4 in conference w/ definte L's against Fresno, UTEP & Boise St and the remainder toss-ups.

What would you predict?

MrMustang1965 - A-Town Pony is actually a Boomer Sooner but he sure does go to quite a few UT basketball games with me. For Austin's only pro team the UT basketball team is not too shabby (ok we have two, UT football).

My point is this A-town. On ponyfans own poll…approximately 30% of those voting think we will win 0 to 3 games next year. Preseason rankings, which I grant can be garbage, almost unanimously have us finishing in last place. I myself think we will win 2 to 4 games this year.

When I look at this team, see the seniors we will lose after this season, see the uncertainty at QB, look at the underclassmen who need to step up and take over, I see a team that will be marginally better than this season. The record might be better due to NTSU and Ark. State, but the team itself…not that much.

So I will go on the record and say if we win only 2 or 3 games this year, I hope Copeland and Bennett get fired. Of course what I am really hoping for is a 5 or 6 win season.

Im going to predict 4-7 but I definately think we could go 6-5 if we work hard enough or even better.

And 7% predict 10-13 wins for the Mustangs. I think these voters should stand up and indentify themselves so that they can be properly acknowledged for their keen football acumin.

Unffortunately I do not see any reason to be hopeful about this season. I think the Mustangs will be 3 and 8.

We need 4 wins. I agree with the guy who said the Baylor game is a big key. Cant give away winnable games at home early in the season. If Baylor proves not to be beatable for us, then it could be another long season I'm afraid. We have to play like there is no tomorrow against Baylor.
