Its a tough call? Who to fire first? Copeland? Bennett? Copeland has done some good things during his tenure and while improvement in certain areas has been glacial, there have been improvements. Donations to the Mustang Club were up for a while. New School of Education can't hurt in making more hours transferable. Getting women's sports participation numbers up. Getting us into CUSA instead of the Southland Conference (where our level of play should put us). He also hired, Cavan, Dement, Bennett, dropped men's track, and did not write a contract with OSU that provided an ability to drop the last away game. Bennett on the other hand has passion, is a good recruiter, and works hard. He is also an Aggie and has won 6 games in three+ years. Contrast that with Johnson at Navy (two bowl appearances). Meyer at Utah (BCS). Francione at UNM and TCU (Bowl appearances). Price at UTEP (Bowl appearance) Kragthorpe at Tulsa (Bowl appearance). With the exception of Price, these were all coaches who were not head coaches at major programs. You can say that Price, Francione, and Meyer had natural recruiting benefits (easy admission policies). But how does that account for Johnson and Kragthorpe. A great coach adapts to his talent and makes them better. We haven't seen any great coaching in the last three years.
How about on the Front....
Jim Copeland….A Time to Leave And on the Back..... SMU Football 35-84 under Copeland
Would any other school in the country put up with what we have had to endure over the last 10 years? Answer: Not on your life. That guy would be out the door so fast he would think a rocket was attached to his pants. No one and I mean no one puts up with mediocrity (and that's putting it kindly) the way SMU does.
For the record, Copeland has been here 10 years, but the joke called SMU athletics has been around for 16 years.
I would never describe this period as ‘mediocre’…we have been anything but mediocre. Over the past 18 years, we have the 4th worst winning percentage in all of college football. Since the infamous ‘Commitment’ speech of nearly 4 years ago, we have gone 7-32, the 3rd worst winning percentage over that period of time. If memory serves me correctly, last year we were dead last in margin of defeat. By any criteria absent graduation rates we simply STINK. And the longer term outlook is not any better. Ask Stallion what last years’ class + this years’ class * 5 gets you….my bet is a lot of thrashings...
