What about Jerry Rice for AD, he just retired and probably hasn't had a chance to line up the television jobs yet. Maybe we could get him while he is still greiving over the end of his football career?
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
Slocum is a re-tread. His teams boring as hell to watch. It was either Toombs or Leeland McElroy lup the middle or pitch left or pitch right.
If we go after a re-tread I'd rather go after Erickson or Bowden. You know a Erickson or Bowden team would try have a little swagger.
[deleted] Tomey would have taken this job. Since we're on re-treads. Does anybody think Jerry Glanville would take the job if was offered. I think he's the DC at Hawaii. I always liked him. He's kind of a quirky dude. Glanville used to leave tickets at the box office for Elvis when he was coaching the Oilers. If he didn't win at least his press conferences would be entertaining.
re:I wonder if Meyer follows the program?
I ran into Coach Meyer at Ford Stadium a couple of years ago and he was very personable. I doubt the adminstration would go there. As long as we are talking inexperienced long-shots.... I say if we are looking for a coach in the future we give Mike Singletary a shot. Ramon Flanigan would be a huge risk, but like somebody already said how could we be any worse? I think for a coach to have success at SMU we are going to need a dynamic "mover & shaker" top notch salesman at AD. The new AD would have to be fearless and take the offense. The AD would need to get aggressive with the Board, the Faculty, and others that are handcuffing the Athletic Departmant over something that happened in the 1980's of the last century! Enough already! Lets loosen the handcuffs and start competing! C-ya @ Milos!
I'll give you a name that I never thought got a fair shake. Dallas Cowboys LB Coach Gary Gibbs. Had the unfortunate responsibility of taking over the OU job in the wake of severe recruiting restrictions under Switzer, cleaned up the OU program and looked to be turning the corner, articulate, face jock, Texas native, one of the best college Defensive coordinators in the country at OU, Georgia, LSU. Reputed to be an outstanding recruiter. Familiar with Texas Recruiting. Has unparrelled contacts throughout the coaching fraternity. Well known to Dallas media. Plus he wouldn't have to move to take the job. If nothing else this guy knows exactly what needs to be done to build a college program. Still reasonably young at about 53. Experience Experience Experience at the highest levels of football -Big Time coordinator, College Head Coach and in NFL.Thinks enough about education to get a Masters Degree in Business. Sounds like a pretty good resume for all the things we are looking for at SMU. How much do NFL LB coaches make anyway.
Call me crazy, but for some reason I believe that one game is a little early to be writing off the season. Let's see how the team improves this season.
I still like Charleston Pony hope that Bennett turns things around because he has a lot of great qualities that you would want in a coach and I'm not sure what coach would want to come here. There are four types of coaches that might come to SMU. (1) the damaged goods coach, like Price and O'Leary, who had great success but messed up and now need to redeemn themselves in mid-major purgatory. Neuheisel and Barnett would fit that mold, but we'd never go there. (2) the up and comer. A great assistant or 1-AA coach who would turn things around (Navy's coach Johnson, Urban Meyer are two examples, as are Cavan and Phil Bennett). Do we want to try that one again? (3) The slightly over the hill guy who wants to keep coaching. (Ross at Army, Schnellenbarger at Florida Int'l). This might be an area to search for a coach. (4) The ex-NFL assistant or head coach (Weis, June Jones, Chan Gailey). Another possible area to look. Now in category 2, you might get a good coach who sees the talent Bennett has on hand and thinks he can do something with it and have a Franchinone type run and keep on chugging. Bennett and Burns need to think about two things for the rest of this season, tailoring their game plans to work with their personnel, and adjustments as the game goes on.
I agree that we need to be thinking more about replacing our AD. I think of what I know about usc. Granted, different situations, but usc wanted someone who was very football savvy. They wanted someone who loved usc football. Look who they hired. Look at what has happened.
As a side, I think Stallion's idea isn't too bad. Go Ponies!
No Cal, I agree with your point of view. I hope Phil can make it because he does have the passion, etc. to make this program work. I just hope he makes a great head coach at SMU.
Huh. Never thought of that. Not ridiculous at all. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
CP, I think I would re-word this to 'IF Bennett succeeds....and I say IF because so far during his 3+ years he has been a failure.' I would rather have Copeland go than Bennett, altough I suspect a new AD would solve both problems. And as for this lovefest of Mike Garrett, his neck was on the line until Pete Carroll turned around their program.
SMU Blog threw out a name I never heard of-Randall Shannon, the DC of Miami. Said it wouldn't happen but that it would scare the crap out of every coach in Texas.
Edit: I just looked up this guy on the Miami website. Wow. I like him. Perrenial top defense. Played under Jimmy Johnson, coached under Dave Wanstead, Butch Davis, Larry Coker. Started 4 years at Miami. Drafted by the Cowboys in the 11th round in 1989 and played two years. As a coach, he went from Miami to the Dolphins and back to Miami. Not even 40. African-american. Won a national championship as player and as an assistant. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
