I checked into it and the NCAA rulebook definitely does require not only that they play 2 games and/or 20% of the scheduled events (rounded) but also verifiable medical evidence from trainers and physicians that the player is not able to play just as XtC said. SMU played 11 games * .20 is 2.2 -is that rounded the 3 or 2. The example in the rulebook says 2.6 is rounded to 3 but what about if less than 2.5. If not rounded up to the next whole number then he wouldn't be eligible for a medical redshirt anyway right didn't he play against Tech, TCU and Oklahoma St. Also as XtC said the player also is not supposed to practice or participate in team drills-did Phillips completely stop practicing last year? I've always had doubts from day 1 that he was really that injured. Does anyone know whether the medical redshirt was officially approved for last year. That's what it comes down to. One final point if Phillips really does have a medically verified rotator cuff injury and it still affects him to this day-which I question-how do all of you all know that he was medically approved to participating in those 7 on 7 tournaments.
