PK,

That's one of the more lucid posts I've read in awhile.

Which brings to mind the central theme of the Young Mustang Club meeting that was held last week... Which is GET INVOLVED. If you're not part of the answer, you're part of the problem.

The reason I hold ED's comments in contempt is that he has every opportunity to make a huge, positive impact here. Instead, he kicks the proverbial dead horse to grab some headlines for himself. The fact is, that he's not once steppped on campus without being PAID for it.

In contrast, 2112 is involved. He's at every game and is a die hard member of the Mustang Club. The boy puts his money where his mouth is. So in my mind, he has every right to [deleted]. And to be heard.

There are 42 members on the Board of Trustees. I cannot really tell from the listing, but I would bet that less than half of them have any affiliation with SMU other than being on the board. Why would they care? Someone needs to point out to them the positive name recognition a winning D-1 football program provides and the positive affects of such name recognition on applications for admission, etc.

that would be the jobs of turner and copeland. they do not have the tools to field a competive athletic department. draw your conclusions from here. maybe they have, maybe they are afraid of rocking the boat, not many are in the position to know the full story.

if they can't figure it out by now with all the countless studies this d^%m university has done since the DP, they'll never figure it out now or whenever!

besides, i'd be willing to bet that they have their own favorite schools they root for besides the board they represent -

& like most boards, its probably full of allies & cronies who are there for status & prestige than the overall good of the school -

You said, "that would be the jobs of turner and copeland. they do not have the tools to field a competive athletic department. draw your conclusions from here. maybe they have, maybe they are afraid of rocking the boat, not many are in the position to know the full story."

"They" in that paragraph refers to Turner and Copeland. Otherwise, it is poorly written and doesn't make any sense. Did you mean to refer to the coaching staff? If so, you needed to be clearer.

"Turner and Copeland do not have the tools to field a competive athletic department." That is what is "Not true."

you're splitting hairs. if you think this department can compete keeping the same status quo as the past 10-16 years, then more power to you.

Turner isn't in "this department." He's the President of the university. When you address Turner, you are addressing the university. The university has the tools to compete. What the university and Turner do not have is the will to do it.

I don't profess to be a great writer, but you need to be clearer.

end of story!

That is precisely my point NC. Copeland represents status quo. As long as he is still here I suspect nothing dramatic will change....and we need dramatic changes.

SMU is expected to finish in the bottom of the pack in C-USA BB this season....Tubbs apparently has missed out on all key Dallas recruits...and the beat goes on....

yeah - good point / it would be a start - wouldn't it?

i know a lot of times when companies try to fill positions they FINALLY realize the shortcoming of the organization at large as well as 'that' department / & in this case, the whole d^$m athletic department -

LOL

But firing Copeland doesn't do anything until the Board actually takes the job of competitiveness seriously. If that doesn't happen, it doesn't matter who the AD is, because we won't be competitive. Firing Copeland will make you feel better for a short time and make you think that we're doing something, when in fact nothing will change.

How many times do I have to tell you, the board of trustees' doesn't realize there is anything wrong. They think losing is caused by the death penalty 20 years ago. By and large, they have no idea SMU does anything differently than any other school. And that goes for 90% os SMU alumni, too.

If a new AD were hired and said, "You know most schools that are successful, spend money on athletics AND they let their coaches recruit players that are not Rhodes Scholars." The board of trustees would resond, "Really?!?!?!" I really believe they have no idea.
