My choice was Jesus, I thought he would make a great coach, plus who in their right mind would turn down Jesus when he walks into your home and says, "hey, I knew you before you were a gleam in your father's eye, you are playing football for SMU." I wouldn't.

The NEW coach next year will be Phil Bennett, after he reinvents this team!

Now who's with me? MagicMustang65? DiamondJim?

I really do believe Bennett gets AT LEAST next year to see if he can turn this thing around, but the window of opportunity is closing fast. Let's face it...SMU has been a loser for so long that it's going to be tough for ANYONE to convince a higher caliber recruit this program can be resurrected. SMU is stuck trying to capture lightning in a bottle and with each coaching change, the powers that be keep hoping they will find the pied piper.

I hope Bennett makes it but if he isn't the guy...I'd still like to see what Charlie Waters might be able to do (assuming he is still interested). As Bennett himself said recently "his friends BEGGED him NOT to take this job". Well, he wanted the promotion and jumped at the offer despite the warnings from his buddies.

I wonder if Charlie Waters' buddies told him not to apply? It appears Charlie just wants to be in Dallas and wanted to get back into football. If Bennett doesn't get it done, I , for one, will always wonder how Waters might have fared.

Norm Chow wants a head coaching job and is prob one of the best minds in college football.....however, I'm sure he will be at a BCS school after this season.

I like Bob Toledo, Charlie Waters, Cutlcife from Ole Miss if he is healthly, Chuck Long....hell, dust off Jerry Glanville, bring back the run and shoot and let all hell break loose.

Heh heh. People forget Norm was considered for the SMU job before. As I recall, he withdrew his name because he wanted Stoops money and SMU wasn't going to give it to him. I believe he has priced himself out of more than one HC job before. BTW, what's the genius's record at Tennessee this year? 2-5? And what is USC's record without him? 7-0?

Three things:
1. That guarantee is meaningless, because there's no chance to prove it head-to-head with the coaches simultaneously working at similar-sized schools with similar academic policies and recruiting the same kids. Makes it easy to sound emphatic -- nice work by you!
2. You sign the mommas and daddies, and I'll sign the players, and let's go play. Translation: it IS important for the kid to have an opinion .... about the coach, the school, the weather, the girl he met on his recruiting trip, the color of the uniforms -- the players' opinions do matter.
3. Any momma or daddy who considers a retired football player a "hero" is a terrible parent. I think your statement sells short the parents of current and future Ponies.

Well the parents of current and future ponies recruited by Bennett do not have kids with enough talent to get us more than 0-3 wins per year, so I doubt Waters could've done any worse even with that nagging Dallas hero status working against him.

Don't hire Charlie!
That would suck having guys like Drew Pearson, Cliff Harris, Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett and Emmitt hanging out on our sidelines. Don't think for one minute Aikman, Irvin etc.. aren't real tight with Charlie. It is a very tight family past and present.

Yeah, but if you hired Jesus you would have it in with God. Think about that. The Almighty manipulating the world on your behalf because you hired his son. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Bob Toledo CAN coach. I would hire him in a second.
Tired of these "Rebuilding Years". That excuse can only be used for so long and then reality sets in.

Harriett Meirs has just become available. SMU grad and probably not quite experienced enough to be waiting for a BCS offer.

The problem with Jesus is he's never even been a coordinator at the D-1 level before. Not questioning his skills, I mean he single-handedly pulled off that upset with the fishes and loaves and all, but there's just a pecking order to the coaching ranks in D-1. Plus, could we even afford him?

We can get him for 13 pieces of silver and he has performed defensive miracles with a recruit that had only a jaw bone of an [deleted].

Fisher DeBerry might be avaliable soon. Though Im sure his comments would be taken even worse here than in Colorado Springs.
