i too am a student and avid mustang football fan. i love football and most sports and end up goin to the soccer games too. SMUnick is right mostly. who the hell wants to attend the entire game of rice vs smu? yes it's their school and future alma mater but both teams are terrible. everyone is obsessed with routin for powerful Texas and therefore regards smu football as being a joke when A&M kills us and we lose all the time. the simple solution comes up time and time again. put up some solid consistent wins, and ppl will flock to see the games. until we get off the platform of mediocrity (if were there?), the riddle of how we get students in the stands will never be solved
don't worry Copeland's goal IS mediocracy. The average SMU fan has simply lost faith in this entire program because it is not designed to EXCELL and is entirely satisfied with simply playing. The First Step is the Model once again. Don't put the cart in front of the horse. A resurgence of SMU Pride will only arise once this simple lesson is learned.
So then the question becomes do we raise our standards or lower the bar? If we had a consistant winning season agains powder puff schools, would that help?
I made a comment to my father today about selling beer in the stadium, and he said that was against NCAA. However, didn't Rice sell beer in their stadium? The best fans we had at the game were these four DRUNK guys dancing behind the band. People go to the blvd to socialize and drink. If we moved that atmosphere into the stadium, would it help? WHERE'S MY KETCHUP?!?!?!
Next year, I'm going to get the band entered into the spirit competition. We would own everyone.
Rock AND Roll
It will improve...This is for sure, just wait for next year's crop of incoming freshman.
Hey genius. We were actually winning a game, that's cause to stay if for no other reason. Give me a break. Yes, go to the bathroom at half time or outside and get a brew, and get back to your seats in the middle of the third quarter. I'm sorry but leaving at the half is just wrong. I guess they should plan next year on announcing the Homecoming King and Queen at the end of the game. No wonder our teams lose, they get a great message that no one cares whether they win or lose.
Don't blame the guy, his lack of interest may have manifested itself with his departure at halftime Saturday, but they guy probably has seen 4 wins in his entire college experience. I don't blame him one bit.
Here's how I always viewed the student participation at games:
1st Home game: Big turnout, almost all freshmen will want to go, all greeks want to impress freshmen, and it's usually a fun "big-game" atmosphere against a name team, like Texas Tech last year, that was a great atmosphere. Everyone has fun until team loses. 1st away game to name team: many students actually get in their cars and go to games at Tech, A&M, I remember a lot at BU a few years ago. Decent fun, students realize that SMU has not the best atmosphere in the world, team loses. Freshmen think "we just lost to Baylor?" and upperclassmen think "ok, this is the same ----, different year" Parents weekend: Decent crowd, parents want to get the whole experience and go to the game. Team wins, everyone goes nuts (was this SJSU/goalpost game last year?). Team is losing, people start filing out in 3rd quarter. Homecoming: Well into a season with only a win or two to be excited about. Few students show up for festivities, leave at halftime. At this point in the season, the college football crowd is all whipped into a frenzy about UT, USC, Ohio State, Bama, whoever, SMU is not even an afterthought, students could care less. It's all about momentum, and it really starts with the first game or two. Beating TCU was awesome, but then we got spanked BAD at a&m and at home by Tulane. Everyone starts realizing it was fluke and the team is bad. From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
I really don't get the mentality. Why should I stick around for the end of a winning game? I mean, I would understand if we were losing 20-0 at the half. But we were winning. I stayed for the entire Redskins -49er's game two weeks ago, despite the fact it was a rout because it was fun to see them win. I also stayed last night and it was great to see them beat the Eagles (the only team I've grown to hate as much as the Cowboys).
So you'll stay and watch the entirety of a NFL game but not your own college's game? That sounds backwards as hell to me. You stay because the in games that are blowouts either direction players who aren't starters get to play and it means something to them if people are in the stands chearing for them. Really, really sad. I'm not even "officially" affiliated with the school and I stayed long enough to hear the alma mater because I respect the sacrifice those guys make and they deserve some appreciation. But I guess that's just lost on some people. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
LonghornFan68...EastStang's sentence struture was not very good, but he was refering to the mentality of someone who asks "Why should I stick around for the end of a winning game?" Eaststang is too far away to be at our games...if he were there he would have stayed for the whole game just like he does for the Redskins games.
I disagree. I reread his statement and the inference is that he were there and it were a blowout, he would leave. I don't think that part of his statement has changed. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
Speak for yourself. Some have jumped ship entirely, some complain all the time, and some are blindly loyal and encouraging. There is no "average" SMU fan.
