next year will be a tough one on attendance numbers. No way a home opener against SHSU comes close to the draw we had for Baylor and Ark St is no contest compared to TCU. As for CUSA games, Tulsa and Houston won't bring but a thousand or two (compare that to UTEP) and UAB fans don't attend home games any better than SMU fans, so that one will be like a scrimmage. Marshall fans are great and travel well, but Dallas is a long ways from Huntington, so they won't bring the numbers UTEP did.

That all adds up to a struggle to average even 15,000 in my opinion. Let's hope next year's team wins and wins big...we can put that "winning cures everything" to a test next year. I think those who are old enough and have been around this program long enough know it's going to be really tough to draw decent numbers with next year's schedule.

speaking of old; note to Mrydel: a few less beers and a prescription for Flomax will help you avoid those late night/early morning wake ups to check those west coast scores

I think the hope would be, at least my hope is, that with the easier schedule next year, we post a good record and a bowl game (optimistically a bowl win), then the following year we bring back some of the traditional rivals like TCU and Baylor and because we have more potential to win and people with memories of a winning season the year before the numbers will start to go up. IF by some chance we can keep the win totals up I would hope/expect the attendance numbers to go up with it. Next year will be pretty bad attendance wise though.

I think we were 89, or something in Sagarin's ratings.

I wonder if Sagarin uses attendance figures in his rankings since his rankings are used by the BCS. He ranked us below most of the teams we beat if I remember right.

Since he caters to the BCS, attendance revenues would be a big factor in their money grubbing schemes.

I was told that we will play Rice, as our fifth game. I don't know if that is true or not.

Unless our Ponies pull off an upset in Lubbock and whip NTSU and come back 2-0. I think that would be a perfect storm leading up to a good crowd for the Ark St game, complete with the DMN headline "Ponies look to extend win streak to 7, start 4-0." Then again, we better make sure the Cowboys, Horns, Aggies, and Rangers wouldn't be playing that weekend.

Agreed.

I think if we can even play close to the Red Raiders, like a last second type deal that the Red Raiders had to pull it out (UAB type deal this year) then we would still get press all over it.

As long as we don't get shell shocked 66-8 again, I think we'll drill UNT to be honest. I think this is the first year that Im planning on attending all four non-conference this season.

Meaning a good crowd for SHSU..We don't need another Hurricane come Tulane game also.

September can't get here soon enough.

We here at Texas State have had the same attendence problem you have had and the cause was the same as well, a good team was normally not on the field. That has changed the past three games as people have begun to come out in droves now that the team is one game away from a national championship game.
In the Pony-Express days you guys would draw 55 thousand plus into Texas Stadium because you were winning. If you win again the people will come. Our average is up to almost 13 thousand for the season and will have another sell-out this Friday night and our stadium is a little under half the size of Ford, seating around 15,400.
As far as the question of people showing up to see Texas State in 2007, which is what is in the works, if we manage to win a National Championship this year and are in the mix in 2006 as well then I know our folks will travel to Dallas to see the game and we have a large alumni base in Dallas as well so I know we will show up for the game and I bet you guys will too.

Copeland's a dope, and Bennett knows nothing about marketing by wanting
to play some very iffy patsies.

Longview HS may exceed us in attendance next year. What happened
to the 15000 average rule for ncaa div 1a?

The attendance rule is still on the books as of the last time I checked, but somebody (Dooby maybe?) pointed out that it was not being enforced last year for some reason.
