I think Rice does have a good canidate for a QB......
The back up QB is Chase Clement who threw for over 3,000 yards his senior year and might have been the 4a player of the year or something like that. Although he is a True Freshman so he might need some growing time and some recievers, but he seems like he might have some potential.

We do NOT want this - as soon as they do the eggheads here in ponyland will start to get similar ideas! Lets all hope they stay in 1A and come in 2nd to us in the division every year.

quite frankly I'd just as soon see Rice football get put out of its misery if they aren't going to compete. They are an albatros around the neck. They are living in a fantasy world where there is no sense of urgency after 45 years since the last bowl game and 35 years since the last NCAA Tourney bid. They don't care if they play in a Junior High Basketball Arena. Plus, no one down there has the balls to stick up for big Time college Football. SMU is a different school than Rice. I believe it when I hear that Rice fans will not compromise their standards to play Division 1A Football. Great! then go play Division 1AA like you should. Otherwise, quit living off other programs. I'd rather have a young and emerging NTSU if they would build a new stadium than put up with another 35 years of Rice.

But is SMU really doing anything anything much differently than Rice? Has SMU had that sense of urgency in the last 15 years.....is our AD sticking up for big time college football?

5 years ago I would have stated unequivocally No and was just as critical of the SMU athletic department. I've argued for awhile now that SMU has done about 85% of what it needs to do to be competitive with 3 main obstacles that really revolve around 1 issue. 1) Division 1A transfers, 2) mainstream JUCOs not just the sholar-JUCO and 3) the curiculm needed to allow 1-2 to occur.

Ponysnob,

You forgot to mention TCU. You should have been able to work that in somehow.

Actually, if leadership at Rice would realize that by amping up their sports programs, they will increase their academic prestige. Everyone knows that Stanford is a great academic institution. Why? Not because Stanford is a great academic institution (so are lots of other schools), but because Stanford appears on TV playing football (anyone remember a QB named Elway?), and had some great Olympic, tennis and golf stars go there. (Tiger Woods, etc.). Rice could very easily be just as attractive and a with a few good football years, would (like Stanford) have their pick of academically strong, quality football players.

I'd like to see North Texas in C-USA. I've heard so much smack from UNT alums over the last three years that they would kill us. (Granted - 2 years ago they probably would have, and that's probably why it ticks me off so much). They would struggle in the new C-USA just as much Rice did this year. But I do think they're up-and-coming, and would be better in the long run. Not to mention, they would probably bring a decent crowd with them.

Well, they have had much more success than either Rice or SMU in the last 10 years on the football field. Please let me know when our program is going to win 10 games a year.....or even start having winning seasons on a regular basis.

I would suggest a top team from the MAC if we could peel one off. That could increase the strength of the league.

Don't know how that would affect the divisional alignments though.

I would rather have UNT. It is a much shorter drive to Denton than to LATech. We could have Mustang Club buses. Playing TCU, BAYLOR, UNT every year would be so easy for fan travel.

If Rice packs it in...and that really wouldn't surprise me...I'd like to see either UNT or La Tech replace them and CUSA would be great for either school. I do agree UNT would be a good conference mate for SMU and those games would be far better attended than La Tech ever was. Getting into CUSA might just get UNT over the hump and I would expect they would become as big a rival for SMU as TCU
