Actually, I could kinda care less. It has absolutely no bearing on my life whatsoever. I don't play petty comparison games to make myself feel better for things that are completely beyond my control. But if that helps you sleep better at night, then be my guest. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
then you must not follow sports at all, cause that is all it is, a petty comparison game over which you have no control.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
That is about the dumbest conclusion anyone could have reached based on my statement. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
Who's upset? I'm chuckling my [deleted] off at the asininity of this thread. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
Hey, Longhorn,
'Petty comparison games'?, 'no control'? Your attitude toward UT's miserable graduation rate makes no sense whatsoever. If college sports aren't about 'comparison games', then what the hell are they? And you'd have some 'control' over it, if enough of you T-sippers gave a damn about the situation. But, you're one cool dude, man. ![]()
I guess you make a point, but I have a budding career and cache of friends and family that are more important to me than the graduation rate of the athletes of my alma mater. I guess I just don't let myself get wrapped up in the idea that somehow this issue is going to affect me dramatically. Is it embarrasing? Sure. Do I wish the statistic was more aligned with my perception of the quality of my University of choice? I'd be insensitive if I didn't. But it's just not the focus of my attitude toward towards my athletic program. Does, that say something about me? I'm sure it does, but I'd be damned if I could tell you what it says. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member

Finally!.....An honest logical answer.....And I can respect that. C-ya @ Milos!
I love my school. I love my degree. I am proud to have my diploma from SMU. BUT would we even be discussing this subject if SMU were going to the Rose Bowl to play for the National Championship? Would we be discussing this if SMU were going to the New Orleans Bowl to play Arkansas State? I think not.
I think this thread speaks to the issue of means to an end and where the line should be drawn when recruiting athletes. Do we recruit athletes who will help us win regardless of academic ability? Or do we want players who will go to SMU, get a degree and be successful in life? Or somewhere in between? UT obviously has taken the first approach. We have taken the second approach. Somewhere there is a happy medium point where we admit enough players to win, but still have plenty graduate and move on to greater things. My view is that out of 80 scholarship athletes, 56 should graduate in 5 years. That's roughly 6 players in each class who would be termed "academic risks". The problem is that for A&M, there are 40 academic risks and for UT 56 academic risks. They can go two deep with virtually anyone they want. We can't. That is a difference that makes it very hard to beat them.
