Put me on camera with a microphone and I can tell the world about SMU football, but put me in the room with the kid and that constitutes a visit. That is not a violation but it is a visit that can lead to potential problems.
oh my god it is so not a visit......good lord guys.......it only counts agianst the college as a visit or whateve if you can prove that someone in the CURRENT smu athletic department asked for someone to go meet with them..if an alumni does it all by themselfs the program can not be punished in anyway..unless there is evidence that a coach or ad had something to do with it...

hahahah sorry got fustrated with the fact this post changed to recruiting violations..you may be right..sorry for attacking you..but from what i understand and i have to understand it in my business....is that a school cant be held accountable for other people.....thats how most big schools get away with paying players........as long as football program has no idea and there is no evidence back to them...then they cant get introuble? right

This is exactly how we got the death penalty. Outside sources began the problem and it grew into the department. I am in no way implying that you are or would do anything of this nature, but I think you will find that most all ncaa problems began with outside of the program folks doing the illegal inducements. Many many programs have been put on probation due to this. Typically, if it can be shown that there was no knowledge of the administarion that the payments or favors were known of, the probation is a mere slap on the wrist. If and when the administration is involved then the penalties are severe. But yes, it is illegal for boosters to be giving inducements to players and it is a ncaa prohibited activity. I look forward to you having a successful business in Dallas, and wish you the best of luck.
you're right mrydel
unfortunately there is a double standard in college sports but that is the way it is - it ain't going to change as long as the non-bcs presidents & athletic directors continue to be the whipping boy wimps ![]() BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
oh yes i understand no alumni can give incentives....but seems that there is no way an athletic department can control what its alumni do or do not do......therefore..if an alumni acts on his own and breaks the ncaa rules...then the program is not penalized but that player is.....i dont think anything happens to the alumni...but in a case like that....i believe legally in ncaa the player himself is the only one that can be held accountable..since the program would have had no knowlege and cant control people outside there program..they should not be held accountable

I recommend that you go to the NCAA website and see the recruiting restrictions on contacts. (ncaa.org). Rule 13.1.2.1. Only recruiters who are authorized by the Institutional staff may have contact with athletes being recruited by that institution. If you have not been authorized by the staff and talk about SMU directly to the recruit (and you are an alum or former SMU athlete), the you are what they call a outside representative of the athletic interests of the institution. In other words you are unaccountable to the institution and therefore your contact would be a violation of that rule unless it falls under one of the exceptions. 13.1.2.1(d) for example allows an established family friend or neighbor to have contact with the recruit (so long as the staff didn't put you up to it). 13.1.2.1(g) permits unavoidable contacts (not on the high school campus of the recruit). I think you can see that most of us here believe that you are treading on some thin ice and highly recommend that you talk to coach Bennett before you talk about SMU to anyone even if they solicit your advice. You might want to read the file on SMU's history of recruiting violations to get the flavor of some of the minor stuff they don't like. Let me give you a thought. Recruit goes to TCU and says, "my personal trainer was an SMU grad, and he really talked up SMU to me. He always wore SMU sweat shirts and we talked a lot about SMU." Ya think the Froggies might turn us in? Remember with the NCAA we're guilty until proven innocent.
i see your point but remember this in life...life is not black and white and every issue is on thin ice....Frankly, i love smu but in no way would i recomend a football player go to that school...unless his personality would fit..he likes it ect. and you said it.....
"In other words you are unaccountable to the institution and therefore your contact would be a violation of that rule unless it falls under one of the exceptions. 13.1.2.1(d) for example allows an established family friend or neighbor to have contact with the recruit (so long as the staff didn't put you up to it)" institution is not liable....kids we train come to use and ask for our services...we do not wear smu atire..as we are an extremely professional business. yes we have lawyers that work for us and in no way are we in any violation of any rule.....if a kid ask me what i think about smu and would he enjoy it there then i can answer anyway i feel....but remember this....why on earth would i try to recruit for smu? there is nothing in it for me. that and i do not agree with many smu's athletic staff....companies like ours are in a lot of cities where big time programs are...strength coaches are realizing they can make more money in the private sector and are doing so.....we bring something special to the table that no gym or trainer can.........but we do not in anyway recruit for a school....doesnt do us any good...i had one qb from atlanta i trained interested in smu and asked me my thoughts..i told him and he went to georgia instead...i was upfront and honest about the program......so to sum up no we will not contact smu or there coaches and ask..there is no need since there is no way i would ever "recruit" unoffically for them stay low boys...keep those feet moving....be perfect.........
oh and also,,,sorry bored at work. no one should recruite a kid or try to sell a kid on smu if he is not going to fit there..no matter how good he is. Kids should go to a school where they feel 1)comfortable int he community the school is in, 2) the institution has a degree or atmoshpere they will mesh with 3) they fit into the head coaches football offense or defense........eric shelton at louisville is a perfect example. FSU sold him on the school..shelton wanted to start as a freshman but there was no way that was gong to happen..so he ended up transfereing.....
doesnt make since to recruite kids to a school if you know they will not last there......kids ask me for advise all the time because of my playing and coaching background and these are the three things i tell them to think about when looking at a school. if i think a kid wil lbe a good fit at smu i will tell him he should look into it or call up the coaches and ask them about it. stay low boys...keep those feet moving....be perfect.........
smu01. It is a shame the morons who post on this board misinterpret the intention of your post and start talking about recruiting violations. Ignore, these morons. Frankly, you could give every single SMU recruit a brand new corvette and no one would give a damn until you start beating Texas, A&M, etc. SMU is irrelevant in college football at this point in time. Don't believe me you morons who spout off about recruiting violations? Ask good ole Phil Bennett how recruiting is going.
Look, BJ, Hummer, Billy Joe, Slurpee, or whatever your name is, those of us who were involved with the University during the time when the death penalty went down, and those of us who have suffered through the aftermath of the death penalty, are a bit sensitive when we see anything that remotely sounds like it might involve potential recruiting violations. We know how the NCAA operates. When they get you in their sights, every trivial BS thing becomes a violation. To you SMUO1, good luck in your business and I hope you succeed. Sometimes people in their zeal to help SMU with the noblest of intentions get SMU into hot water. My only thoughts to you were to let you know that we just don't want to see you on Dale Hansen's television show except for the one spotlighting the outstanding Young Businessmen of Texas (which of course that POS would never run). We just don't want to take any steps backward.
I for one understand where smu01 is coming from...so do the guys at the Highland Park branch of 'Velocity,' who have a similar business model. I think smu01's bunch is who I'd have my kid signed up with.
That being said, the NCAA's view on contact is spelled out pretty clearly in the stuff the Mustang Club sends out every year. I can see to an extent where EastStang is coming from; in fact, the asst AD's name who is on the MC flyer lists his cell phone number and says that he'd rather get a call at 11pm about a question as to whether you can or can't do something than to find out afterwards. My suggestion for those who want to be sure would be to take his advice. I think the flyer lists those that have to be careful as alumni, boosters, and people who are representatives of the university's interests or something to that effect...and they say Mustang Clubbers are the latter. If this was Ohio State or UT, none of this would matter.
This illustrates one of the biggest benefits of not belonging to the Mustang Club. As a non-member, I feel free to have recruits over for steak dinners and buy their beer and pot with impunity, since I have not reviewed this M-Club propoganda. In fact, reading in the Morning News today that the old prostitute-infested Circle Inn is to be sold and demolished has put a real damper on my latest recruiting ploy....
