Not James. Candidate must be able to work with faculty and have their respect, unfortunately.

It is not Copeland's fault that SMU doesn't sell out football game. The media does not even cover the team for local casual fans.

They might do well to look at Assistant AD's at BCS schools in charge of promotion. That's where they found Potts at Maryland. Now that we're in CUSA and I think we're there to stay (although its form may change over the years), we need an AD who's mission it is to raise money, raise h e double hockey sticks with the administration, and raise awareness of our program. We need to work on becoming Dallas' college team. Georgetown has succeeded in doing that in DC in basketball to a degree whereas GW has never really gotten traction with area fans. We need someone who knows the Dallas market. Perhaps it might be a VP of sales at Frito Lay. I think we need to really look inside the State of Texas.

I have enjoyed Scott Secules contributions and feel he knows us and can move us forward. Young and high energy.

BTW, an antedote, Scott was MVP at 1987 All-American Bowl against BYU as QB at Virginia.

I don't know enough about Secules to make a decision. Whoever SMU hires needs to shake things up. It is a sad fact if the AD needs to placate the faculty as tought by some. You think usc was worried about Mike Garrett having the faculty's respect?

The next AD wil have to have a lot of passion, desire, and willingness to make change.

Go Ponies!

Is he a salesman? Could he round up the alumni and induce them to donate en masse? In the story about Copeland weighing the possibility of retiring, it said there are plans in place to upgrade Westcott Field, Perkins Natatorium and build a practice gym for basketball. Does James have the connections to make that happen?

You're right -- interesting idea.

Think his son would walk-on, since children of employees get free tuition?

All the more reason for the local casual fan to attend the games, n'est pas? The AD's job includes putting butts in seats, Potts did it the best.

Wouldn't that be an anecdote (of sorts)?

When I lived in Dallas, I showed up at the games and was given tickets. People don't show up at the games because the DMN or the Park Cities People don't even cover the team. People don't even know there is a game.

Actually, the PCP started covering the Ponies again this year. I see their sports editor at many of the games. I don't know if they preview games in advance, though (I doubt it), because I never read that paper.

Of course, their website has no content on it -- just self-promotion and information on how to advertise or subscribe -- so nobody outside the Park Cities is allowed to know if they cover anything or not.

That is great, I had no idea. I wrote them a letter a couple of years ago. I have no access to their coverage.

Scott Secules probably needs to find a greener pasture. He will be an outstanding athletic director somewhere, someday. We, obviously, need a shake-up here. Staying "in-house" wouldn't be a good idea.
