Who cares what some spare underage wanna-be journalism student thinks anyway.
Phil is the man and he will take us places! GO PONIES!
couldn't agree more!
![]() BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Actually the Crush party lists are no longer printed in the DC because EdBoard wrote a critical article about Sorority life a few years back so Panhellinic decided they didnt need the paper. Maybe Athletics should try it, no more access to the game or coaches by "reporters" etc.
Isn't Ed Board the same people who wanted to ditch Peruna, and replace it with a metrosexual riding a full size horse? I hate them.
But I agree, it's hard to justify a raise.
I, on several occaisions, have heard the story that the Harvard news paper staff (used to/still does) recieves a print edition subscription to the Daily Campus.... to show their young writers how NOT to make/write for a campus newpaper. Whether this is/was true, I can't know for sure - the story was origingally relayed to me by my HIGH SCHOOL's academic advisor to our student newspaper, and has since been repeted by other credible sources.
While I do believe that, on this issue, they COULD write a convincing argument against Bennett's raise and extension, I don't believe that they have. It appears, to me at least, that their unending vitriol directed towards the athletic department continues unabated. I wonder just how many games the Ed Board made it out to this year. I was at, or watched, every game this year (thank you very much All Access), and it was a very enjoyable season. Not fulfilling, not a complete sucsess, but there are too many positives that came out of this season, to write anunfounded anger piece. I have to agree whole heartedly with LF68 on this one... Perhaps this was too soon to some, but the business of college football is a high stakes game. The interest was their from K-State and just the mere mention of it on ESPN kept SMU in the news. If Bennett builds on his sucsess here at SMU again this upcoming season (which I feel that he will), far more lucrative offer will come his way. LF68 is on to exactly what the athletic department was thinking, this is an almost impossible job that Bennett has, and has done admirably. And a paltry (in this business) extra 50K a year to show him that his tireless effort is appreciated, will go along way next year, to show him that we believe in him... and if we do the same or worse next year, well, it was a gamble that failed, but worth the price. what's being lost in all this, is that the contract extension is simply a recruiting tool to show that the coach who recruits you, "will" be at the school for most/all of a student athlete's career.
and a $50,000 raise may be a lot, it also cement's the school's faith in the coach and that will translate down to the recruits. AND in the big scheme of things, paying a D1 head coach $500k/yr isn't that much. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Does anyone know how Bennett's 500K compares to other CUSA coaches? My brother tried to tell me Snyder at Marshall makes 175-200K, and I told him he was nuts. Anyway, I'd be curious to see a list. Am I right in assuming that 500K is some pretty good money for a non-BCS school?
Actually the move seems more PR than substance. I am sure the added 50K is nice but it was only a one year extension. That is almost a status quo move.

Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
TCU was ready to offer Fran $1,000,000. Don't know what Patterson is being paid, but would think it is in the same neighborhood of what Bennett is now making. I know someone who can probably give me the actual number and I'll post it later.
Patterson is making SUBSTANTIALLY more than $500,000. Its closer to the $800,000-$900,000 range but he's had two 10 win seasons and a Top 10 finish and has earned it. He's also has the best combined non BCS recruiting classes over his tenure.
Gee the grad rate is 89% in a DC article, is that cause for a raise?

its been recently discussed on the Frog forum especially when K-State was considering Patterson. When you have two seasons flirting with the Top 10 in 3 years then you'd better sweeten the pot if you want to keep the guy.
