That's the way I read it.

Really? How many games did he win at quarterback? Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying he can't play. I like him and I think he has talent. But it's not like he's John Elway.

Frankly, I'm more concerned about the "I'm thinking about it" quote. What's there to think about? He wants to retain his scholarship. The coaching staff wants to find a way to get him on the field and get the ball in his hands, in positions where he could show off his athleticism. Is it really his decision? I always was a Phillips fan, and will remain a Phillips fan, and I'd like to see him on the field.

No the John Elways on our team are the collection of All-District scrappy QBs we have at that position. What a collection of superstars we have there we must of turned off about 1,000 rocks to end up with these guys.

How do you turn off a rock?

And for what it's worth, I also remember you emphatically saying Bamba Fall was a project who was 2-3 years away from contributing in any significant way.

so was Phillips all state, then? all-Tapps?

Stallion I thought you would be pulling for Willis. He was a three star 5.5, wasn't he? The same as the WVU redshirt qb who torched UGA in the Sugar Bowl?

One guy has a surgically repaired (perhaps) rotator cuff; the other one doesn't. Both played the same amount last year. Phillips' last game pt came what will be 2 years ago this fall. I don't see the stark contrast you do.

Maybe the position thing actually is his choice. Maybe they told him he'd have a better chance to get on the field as a TE, or he could continue to compete at the QB position, his choice.

I don't think that's hard to believe.

I hear one guy even threw for 800 yards in JUCO and almost hit on 47% of his passes-not quite 46.3%. WHAT we REALLY NEED is one more TE!!!!!!! Plus every single QB on our roster has grown 2 inches since high school so all these guys should be 6-3 or 6-4 by next fall.

His rotator cuff is blown up and he won't have surgery

I heard rumors last season that Phillips was in PB's doghouse for various reasons including a bad attitude. Supposedly he would have rather pulled Willis's redshirt before having to play Phillips at QB.

I am not sure if this is true or not, but in this day and age of the "whiney me first athlete" it does not seem like too much of a stretch. If this is in fact the case I would commend Phil for taking a hard stance and not letting the players walk all over him and the rest of the team.

Regardless of the situation I would rather start a Redshirt freshman with great skills to an older player with similar skills and NO RECENT GAME EXPERIENCE. What the heck does it matter that he played a couple of games forever ago? I would say him and Willis would be on equal footing in the game experience department to start next season bc it has been so long since Phillips has seen the field. Start Willis- he is our guy.

There's a big difference, not only in game experience but physical and mental maturity. The last thing SMU needs is a red shirt frosh QB, all things being equal.

The same way Bo Jackson got cleared to play again. It wasn't going to get any worse, it just won't get better without surgery.

I think everything about Phillips on this board is pure conjecture.

Personally, I never believed there was a real serious rotator cuff injury, but acknowledge it is possible. I also doubt if there was an injury, he refused to have surgury. I think he was shut down after three games his sophmore year to preserve his redshirt. And I think that was the plan all along if he did not set the world on fire.

I also don't think he has a bad attitude. Does a QB with a bad attitude call signals from the sideline? Or does he sit and sulk? He sits and sulks. Phillips did not appear to do that.

I agree. He also was part of the group that dumped the bucket on Coach Bennett after one of the wins, I think it was the win over TCU (maybe that was the only ice shower Coach Bennett had this year?) Nobody who's on the outs with his coach would take part in that.

Lets see ....is there anyone who stands to benefit more then our coaching staff, especially Bennett if SMU wins? and also....

Does a full time coaching staff or a part time blog rat know more about football players? Who spends more time watching and grading the players?

Would the coaches - the acknowledged experts - not therefore want to put SMU in the best postion to win by playing the best available player at QB?

Relax and trust your staff. They know what we do not. If they are the wrong staff fire them.
