SMU basketball needs to start paying their players but the football team is developing the "right way"

If you're going to lump UT into this conversation, you might as well lump every other Div 1A school in as well.
Every other Div. 1A school EXCEPT SMU.

Greetings, folks.

Dale Hansen has the post. He was intrigued.

The Big 12 and other major conferences cheat their a$$e$ off. The difference is nobody cares.

well said -

like the good smu prof said too: no one cares about a 30% graduation rate either (paraphrasing)

its simply lip service  for the big boys & the rules for the rest of us
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Like LF68, I fail to see how an A&M recruit talking about money in his pocket has anything to do with Texas at all.

Seriously some of you guys need to take a step back and look at what the kid said. He's a scholarship athlete and part of that scholarship includes STIPENDS - money for food, living, etc. It may not be a whole lot, but maybe it is to him depending on his family's background. If athletes do not spend the alotted amount on housing or food, they can pocket the difference and this is allowed by the NCAA.

Applies to every D1 school, including SMU.

It isn't whether the money is classified as a stipend or not, the quote reads that "they keep money in your pocket". Like no matter what, they make sure you have the money. The other thing that is suspect about it, is that every program gives stipends so why would A&M's be a deciding/differentiating factor?

This article deserves at least a look into by the NCAA which they won't really pursue because they don't make money by coming after their BCS programs.

The kid is 18 years old and his brother play for ATM...so he sees that his brother has money and food/rent is paid for. He may not be the smartest kid and just did not phrase it properly...these are not the days of FedEx and ATM. If they are, it's definitely not paying off for Fran!

Precisely. If you're going to pay for players, at least pay for good ones.

Some of you people need to get over yourselves.

Good point, me@smu.

Why WOULD the stipend money be his deciding factor?

Rather than getting over it, more need to look into it.

Do you, personally, have proof? I'd love to see it. I'm guessing you're some basement conspiracy theorist bent on bringing the big ole meanies at Texas and aTm down.

Perhaps, grasshopper, when the results of my public information request with the UT athletic department come in, I'll have some interesting things to report.
