Ricky Williams, I believe, was not on scholarship. Seriously. Part of the arrangement for these two-sport guys is that they'll sign with a pro baseball team, spend a couple months over the summer shagging flies and hitting weak groundouts to second, and the team will then pay his school costs, in addition to whatever other compensation the guy is getting. So if the player gets a $100K signing bonus (in an effort to get the player to abandon football altogether, as the Baltimore Orioles did 6 or 8 years ago with Texas RB recruit Darnell McDonald -- who turned out to be a terrible baseball player and now has no future in either sport), he can pocket that money and spend it on a plasma TV, or whatever he wants. I don't know if Benson had a similar arrangement. Didn't he sign with the Dodgers at some point?
