...Now, I'm not saying I disagree with the idea that good academics is good for recruiting, but I am saying it should not be used a recruiting tool.

Why would you not use good academics as a recruiting tool?

A recruiting tool box usually has several tools (at SMU - good academics, state-of-the-art-Ford Stadium, Dallas, attractive collegiate-looking campus, regional division of a competitive conference, Park Cities, good coaches, etc.).

Why not use the proven tools that you have in a competitive situation?

Do you understand that SMU is an academic institution and its primary mission is education?

Some student-athletes actually want a respectable education and a degree from a respected university.

Do you think SMU is singular or unique in that respect? No. There are student-athletes that are grad students, honors students, etc who want to excel in the classroom at every school.

But on the recruiting front (and I have been speaking specifically of athletic recruiting), I think on-field success or program building are bigger draws for prospective recruits than stats about classroom results.

I don't think there is a school out there whose mission statement claims that they are a sports-first, education-second institution.
