SMU Football Blog wrote:Look, it takes six wins to be bowl eligible. One of those can be I-AA, I know some people say that last part is not set in stone, but that is the rule as it is now and I assure you it isn't going to change considering how hard it was for a lot of schools to find a 12th opponent (some schools still don't have them). Regardless, as a practical matter, it is probably going to take more than six wins as there will likely be more teams with six or more wins.

Unless new legislation is passed in the NCAA, it will take 7 wins to be eligible. An emergency act allowed UNT to be eligible a few years ago at 6-6, but that has now expired and the standing rule is that you have to have a winning record (which would imply either 6-5 or 7-5 depending on the unmber of games). There have been discussions about changing it permanently, but the last I heard was that there was no final decision. We can count a win over a I-AA team though. That means we would need to be 6-5 or better against the I-A teams on the schedule.

This team, this school can not look past their own shadow for a victory. I believe that PB is building a better team but SMU/we/us/PB have not EARNED anything as of yet.

Go Mustangs, work hard and maybe.... maybe we can win.

One other note, the I-AA board did not approve the 12 game schedule, so they will stay at 11. This means there may not be enough I-AA teams available for everyone to use them as a 12th game.

Upon further review, the rule is six wins and more wins than losses. I was wrong. Actually, I wasn't wrong, just incomplete to my detriment.

BTW, the exemption for UNT in 2001 was because they were 5-6 and still won the conference and the Sunbelt was contractually obligated to send its conference champion to the game.

So technically we could go 6-5-1 though a tie is very difficult to get. 8)

Well, if we are going to have to tie a game to get into a bowl we should shoot for the Sam Houston State game.

Trying to tie this game would be beneficial for two reasons:

1. If we don't beat them we won't have to worry about having of our wins effectively negated for being against a I-AA team.

2. It would be easier to tie a I-AA team since they aren't as good. I would imagine SMU will have no problem manipulating the final score of a game against a I-AA team like Sam Houston State.

Just exactly how do you tie in college football? The game is called after regulation, due to storms?

What if both teams forfeit? Is that a tie or 2 losses? or 2 wins?

What was so weird for UNT was they were a conference champion and there was a bowl tie in that forced them to be selected as well.

I agree with the sentiment but we need to get over ourselves.
