This statement is no comment whatsoever on Slater's ability because I have not seen him play. However, it is my opinion that Bennett wanted a QB who had taken a college snap on the roster (Phillips excluded supposedly due to rotator cuff injury). I think Bennett was uncomfortable in having a redshirt freshman starting. Speed in college, even Jr College is much faster than high school. However, I feel now that Bennett has apparently selected Willis to start and Slater may, barring injuries become irrelevant. Again this is no statement on his ability. I had stated in a previous post, and still would not be surprised if Slater started against Tech, and then Willis was worked in mid way thru the NTSU game, just to save Willis's confidence and body. It seems though that Willis showed enough stuff in the spring to warrant the start. We shall see. Less of a comment on Slater than SMU is the fact that out of all of the JC QBs in the country, Slater was the one we were able to persuade, or get enrolled at SMU. I think the process bore out that we had others on tap to sign but apparently could not get them into school, thus Mr. Slater was given the opportunity. As of now, the football prayers need to be directed to the well being and fast progress of Willis in a D-1 setting.
