I question the commitment to the football program of any alum who would want to fire Coach Bennett if we win more four or five game. If we went 1-11, I would give him one or two more years.

Very few on this board are consistently anything other than frustrated.

Orsini has said "it is time for [bennett] to produce results" I would interperate that to be 'without a winning season he is gone', assuming there is a good coach available. If a top-shelf big name coach is available, expect to see bennett fired unexpectedly among aligations of hot dogs and palmolive.

I don't recall Orsini saying that exactly. When did he say that?

I really think it would be difficult to get anyone better. Coach Bennett came here with a great resume. He has improved the skill of the players and we are now close to be a mediocre football program. I was in school during the Cavan era, and there was little discipline in the program. I like his style, and I also like that he is a class act. He may be too cocky and need to watch his mouth a bit, but I do think he is dignified and represents the school well.

If Bennett is fired, forget any assistant coach from a big program in the country. If he had just stayed at KSU, he would be there coach right now. No one would take a shot at SMU, we would get some D2 coach--and there aren't many Tressel's to be had out in D2.

You've got to be kidding. I personally don't see either happening (I think we start 1-1, with a win in Denton), but if the scenario you describe unfolds, we'll be disappointed with the NTSU loss, for sure, but also have the confidence that we can beat a pretty strong Big 12 team. The guys could have quit after losses to Tulane or ECU last year, but thankfully they didn't. No way we would have won three straight at the end if the guys jumped ship that easily. Let it play out -- the team is better and that will be evident this year.

Ditka would be awesome. He could scare all of Texas into transferring here. With no scholarships.

I am being slightly facetious.

Here we go again!!!!

Bennett is the head coach at SMU, and will be the head coach, so why are we throwing out replacement coach names? Eveytime somebody mentions firing Bennett, we start this pathetic posting of replacements.
Just send 'da money.

BUS, you're a great SMU fan, obviously. But even you have to recognize the fans have been saying that for the last 10 years. I'll believe it when I see it. Especially at QB, where our program has been dismal in development of a leader.

Coach Phil Bennett ... said Monday that Mustangs fans should expect SMU to qualify for a bowl for the first time since 1984.

Deductive logic dictates that 6-6 won't get you a bowl (that's most likely 3-5 in conference)...thus, 7-5 (4-4) is the bare minimum that might qualify.

We should expect it, and if not, pull out the zippo.
