Hey, just Tanqueray and tonic for me until November. Then Makers Mark and water. If you want it related to horses, there's the classic Mint Julip. But why spoil the bourbon with sugar and mint. In fact why spoil the bourbon with water or ice, Fish Make Love in it. Beer always works. These other drinks sound so (hmm, how do I put this)....

Let's think about this logically.

First, it is going to be warm or downright hot before each game. Therefore, the drink must be cold. Anything without ice is out. Shots are out.

Second, we are tailgating. The drink must be simple. Setting stuff on fire is out. Drinks with 10 ingredients or more are out. Drinks with exotic ingredients should, if not out, be discouraged.

Third, we are outside. Drink must be able to be served in a plastic or styrofome cup. Therefore, martini's are out. Shots are out.

Fourth, SMU colors are red and blue. Deference should be made to drinks with those colors. For example, grenadine is good. Somebody mentioned Blue Curacao, which is a good suggestion, notwithstanding the fact that the liquor is a little exotic.

Basically, we need the SMU equivalent of the mint julep.

Be careful mixing those two lest you be drinking something purple. A horned toad, perhaps?

If based on the past 20 years, I would suggest a "Sufferin' Bast@rd" (Multiple Rum Polynesian drink).

I wasn't suggesting mixing the two.

Here is something simple:

A Peruna Tonic (or better name to be determined):

A simple gin and tonic with a splash of grenadine (for the red color).

You can also do it with a vodka tonic.

I like it P.Soprano...

And, above, well thought out blog, I think we should start from there.

SMU Football Blog wrote:Basically, we need the SMU equivalent of the mint julep.

Exactly what I said in the post that started it all (in the "uh oh" thread) -

ThadFilms wrote:...... an official drink of the Boulevard... you know, like the Mint Julep (at the Kentucky Derby), and others...

I propose:

The Tequila Mockingbird

Any how... let's just not have a name like Julep... sounds too much like Tulip.

I say we take Blog's outline and hand it to a "certified" mixologist and have that person come up with the beverage. Perferably someone from/familiar to SMU. However - I know a guy in St. Louis who would be perfect for the task... he's the mixologist for a bar up their by the name of The Royale (which I highly recomend shoulf you find yourself in the STL), a joint that specializes in their own concocted drinks.

They have a drink for every ward in the city, and then some - including their signature drink, the Subcontinental, which is like no drink I've ever had before, and is possibly my favorite mixed drink.

Or just go with one of those suggested in this thread (like P.Soprano's).

Amd to answere your - PonySoprano - question from the "uh oh" thread, I have no idea what you would mix with the tequila in a Tequila Mockingbird. The idea of having an official drink of the Boulevard was not a joke, however the name I suggested (The Tequila Mockingbird) was slightly in jest.

I would think something like "The Hilltopper" would be nice. (Though I am aware that Western Kentucky are the Hilltoppers.)

The best part of this simple idea, is that if you swap the grenadine for some blue caracao, and voila: You have a blue one. We've just achieved red, white, and blue cocktails for the blvd. This assumes that you don't mind the hint of Orange from the Caracao.

I have to admit that when I read Tequilla Mockingbird I merely looked at it and did not grasp the cleverness of the pun. I like this name and think we should develop a simple drink, with Tequilla and use the name Tequilla Mockingbird. If you want to actually establish a Boulevard Drink there has to be something that will distinguish it as a special item and this name could do this. So come on all you party guys.... Tequilla and _______. One mixer over ice. Simple, good and a great name.

PS. All of the mixologists out there, is there already a drink by this name?

Yes, Hilltopper is a good name. Peruna is a good name. The only other names I can think of are "Bishop" for Bishop Boulevard or "Doak" for Doak Walker.

I found that there already is a Tequila Mockingbird.

1 1/2 oz Tequila
1/2 Triple sec
1/2 Blue Curaco
2 oz Orange juice
1 oz Cranberry juice.

May be too much for a "easy drink". I nominate Thad to pre mix 100 gallons for the opening day on the boulevard and we can try it out!!!

There already is a Tequilla Mockingbird recipe(a couple of them actually).

2 oz Tequila
- 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Creme de Menthe (white) - Glassware: Cocktail Glass

Or...

1/2 cup unsweetened apple cider
2 oz. tequila
2 oz. black currant-flavored liqueur (Cassis)
2 tsp. fresh lime juice
ice

Or...

1 1/2 oz tequila
3/4 oz green creme de menthe
juice of 1 limes

Or...

1 1/2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Triple sec
1/2 oz Blue Curacao
2 oz Orange juice
1 oz Cranberry juice

Actually, that last one might work
