I agree that they need to play much more - it is annoying when the team gets a first down and I don't even hear one run through peruna.... but as far as "since they are not allowed to play peruna over and over" it is a rule about when they can play, not what songs they can play. It is hard to fit a song into the gap between plays.

Most college bands have a repetoire that includes classic favorites like the Imperial Death March from Star Wars, Black Sabbath's Iron Man and other fun songs to get the crowd into it.
Little jazzy ditties and the same 2 SMU spirit songs make me want to leap from the top of Ford by about the midpoint of the 2nd Quarter.
Band folks - is there a legitimate reason for this? It really drives myself (and PLENTY of other students) nuts.
I tell you what, give some money to the band so they can afford to fill out their repetoire with the music you want. Until then it ain't going to change. The people that financially support the band are the ones that like the music that is being played. Funny how that kind of thing works.
are you serious.. we have to give money to a band.. they are the band, we should be complaining about them playing too much not too little.. over the last two years i counted many times when they are sitting on their butts not playing.. Hell they play all the time at smu bball games.. they used to play thriller and that was awesome.. i don't think they have played thriller at the football games.. Peruna 2001... TAMU plays alot more than 5 songs, they are constantly playing songs.. Back in they day the SMU band created a new rule in the college rulebooks.. they were known to play perune over 200 x's a game... Since they are not allowed to play peruna over and over.. Let's see here, the Band depends on donations to replace worn out instraments, uniforms, music and everything else it needs to function. Yes there is some money from the University, but the Band would still be wearing the same uniforms from the 1960 & 70s iif it weren't for the generousity of people who wanted to see the Band dressed in some better uniforms. The Band isn't going to bite the hand that feeds them, those silverhairs who are the only ones that are enjoying the bands tunes? Those are also the ones that are giving the most money to keep the band functioning. If they get pissed off because the band starts playing modern music that they don't like and then stop giving, are you going to step up and keep the band going?
Yeah, I thought not.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Here's a link:
www.volnation.com
Go over there and ask 'em if they can play something other than that same damn 'Rocky Top' song.
Then come back and tell us what they said.

I will repeat this again...
NO ONE CAN COMPARE AN SMU GAME TO AN SEC GAME (except maybe vandy) its like comparing apples to oranges.
i said it in the david miller bashing thread by the way, not this one.. but it still works here..

Censorship will get you nowhere. And if you are repeating again, doesn't that mean you already said it twice?

When you are talking about football, you're right. There's no comparing SMU to SEC football...not yet anyways. But you're attacking the band. You can look at any other band in the nation. I mentioned the A&M band before. If you think they play more than 5 songs, maybe you're counting their school song in the mix. The Mustang Band will always have more in the repetoire than A&M ever will. The great thing about both is they are original. A&M has a military-style band. How many other schools have that? SMU dresses in three-piece suits and plays jazz music. How many other schools have that? If you want your typical high school band that plays "Louie, Louie", "Darth Vader March", or name any other overused, unoriginal piece of music, try going somewhere else. If you have a suggestion for an original piece of music that you don't hear anywhere else, try writing a letter to the band. The band's website is www.mustangband.com. And yes, as abezontar pointed out, make a donation to the band. Music doesn't just grow on trees. It requires an arrangement which can take a while to put together or some money to buy the music.

BTW, if you were watching (or in my case, listening) to Michigan State-Notre Dame, you heard Vader's march a 100 times, too.

how about Florida State and "Seminole"-that will drive you nuts. Makes everyone in the stands groan when the band starts up.

Other than "The Aggie War Hymn", "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight",The Theme from "Patton," The Theme from "The Green Berets," "The Imperial Death March" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," what else do they play? Also, you should take note that they don't play anything other than Marches.

The 2006 Mustang Band is bigger and better. Got the best twirler in the U.S., a terrific new drum major, more members and unmatched enthusiasm. Thanks for all your hard work and re-enforcing important traditions that some (short timers) would cast aside.

I totally agree. My wife is no football fan at all, but she still enjoyed the game against SHSU and is still talking about how good the twirler is. And the band size is much better this year than last. They sound good in the bowl.

still wish we had more in a band.. and yes I know it's growing and it takes time/money. But I can still wish.. hate that the band is so small in comparison to others.
Hopefully at Tulane we'll hear some "When the STANGS Come Marching In" because the band is a Dixieland Band.. correct? ? ?
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

I think this Saturday is the Debut of the Tulane Marching Band at least in New Orleans. They were one of the few if not the only school without a marching band.
