What did you you guys tell them? I don't want to get my emails too far off from everyone else's. It'd be less effective.

It would be more effective, actually. Better than if it looked like you cut and pasted it.
Be truthful. Say you support SMU athletics. Say you have kept up to date on this matter. Say you believe the player should be allowed to rejoin the team.

It won't hurt to say that you're a member of The Mustang Club and/or a season ticket holder, too.

Why? So they can go "oh he'll be at the game anyway. And he better, after all we pay 3% of his tuition in scholarships!"
